If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

Shopping The first day starts with our complimentary "Sunshine Breakfast" downstairs in the pub where I try a bagel. Thought I would try it with jam - who was I kidding. Jam in Canada is not the jam we have in oz. It is "Fruit with Pectin". Which translated mean jelly flavoured like the blandest jam you can find. Won't have that tomorrow lol We walk downtown further and go to Pacific Place shopping centre although we want to be at a big shoppingtown called Metropolis. To get there we ask a few questions and then catch the train - called [View Full Entry]

Super Ferry Animals
Super Ferry Animals
Pen and I on the ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland, looking for whales...no luck though.
Well we got off the ferry and we were in Newfoundland. We’d heard from so many people that it was beautiful, and we have to admit we were looking forward to be surrounded by that amusing Newfie accent. So with great anticipation we proceeded to get lost driving through the town center of Port aux Basque looking for the tourist information. After giving up and deciding to head north…surprise it was on the way out of town, with no signage (none that we saw). Bloody newfies ;o) So we went in got all the info we needed, including confirmation that we [View Full Entry]

The ferry ride from St Barbe, Newfoundland to Blanc Sablon, Labrador took almost 2 hours. Whilst on the ferry ride Scott met a surgeon who travels around the country filling in for other doctors on leave. He told us the day before he met someone who had done the same ferry crossing and saw 60 whales, we were so excited thinking we might see a few whales. It was not to happen, I saw just a glimpse of the back of a Minke whale but that was it. When we reached the other side, the excitement of driving down dirt roads [View Full Entry]

Back in Medicine Hat I decided to buy a car for my journey. I checked out a few online adds, went to a few appointments and called at least a thousand insurance companies. Finally I got a reasonable offer and decided to buy a 1986 Pontiac 6000 for 500 dollars. I added a new waterpump and a new battery for 200 dollars, registered the car in Alberta (I got my first own licence plate :) got the oil changed, and the car has been running fine since :) Considering the lousy public transport in North America, having my own car = [View Full Entry]

Travelogue - Day 1 Seattle, Washington Hello everyone! Greetings from Vancouver! Our travel day yesterday could not have been better. We took off from San Diego at 10:30 a.m. and flew directly up the center of California, Oregon and Washington. After about an hour in the air, I could see Half Dome in Yosemite Valley and then directly below us appeared Lake Tahoe. The lake appeared to be full and was gorgeous colors of green, blue and turquoise all around the shore on the east side of the lake. Flying north from Tahoe, we passed over several lakes in Nevada and [View Full Entry]

From Marja The last few days has meant saying goodbye to the Rocky Mountains. It's a bit sad as it was so spectacular. We ended on a high point with a helicopter flight and I got some very good photos out the window. Calgary is a nice town and I spent the time winding down from the tour and getting the washing of clothes sorted. I still haven't had a bad meal in Canada and the service is excellent. To add to my holiday happiness they have a lot of "Dog the Bounty Hunter" on TV. I love Dog. I especially [View Full Entry]

And the days sweep by... I know I haven't been keeping up with this blog... My sincere apologies. So what have I been up to? Well, my study is finally up and running and I had my very first participants this morning! It was quite a hassle to get where I was going.. I mean, I have to apply to post documents online, I have to apply for approval, I have to apply to apply... Just a whole world of bureaucratic rules and policies that seem to have bypassed their goal. Oh well. All is fine now. I just hope to [View Full Entry]

Courage North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver
“Be courageous,” Gabriel says to me, at three already deeply in love with words. He gives me a sidelong glance before plunging a forefinger into a bucket of fish roe, scarlet up to the knuckle. That is how our last morning began: a happy grandmother, standing on a wharf, modeling courage but not feeling brave. It has occurred to me that I am cutting myself ruthlessly adrift, after 35 years of non-stop mothering. I must have liked it, I tell myself, and the truth is I have, though not every single bit. So now that the last step-chick has flown the [View Full Entry]

CORRECTION TO YESTERDAY’S BLOG: I received a kind comment on the blog from a person who clearly knows his “fauna” better than I. The comment informs me that the five “moose” I described (and took a photo of) are actually “elk”. I have every reason to believe that he’s right because, when it comes to members of the “venison” family (and many other families), I don’t know what I’m talking about. Thank you for the clarification! It rained last night but had stopped by morning, so I hit the road with the top down (as us [View Full Entry]

QANTAS Flight QF11 Flight on an A380 from Australia to Vancouver - sounds like a fantastic flight. Well, the majority was. Flyed from Brisbane to Sydney and the flight went well. The Transit Lounge to go from Domestic to International was like cattle call really. Humans stuffed in a room waiting to be called onto a truck, oh I mean bus. We got on quickly though as our flight was being asked to Go To Gate. This took us round the glamorous behind the scenes of Sydney airport. We even went right past our A380 and went through many extended renos [View Full Entry]
