If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

Hi there blog-meisters! Theresa and I have had a fun week up in Churchill... We dined in Churchill's finest restaurants (all two of them), and took a couple of very colourful and scenic drives along the coast. One highlight was having a polar bear run across the main street in town when we were out walking! Just a nice reminder that you could be killed and eaten at any time by Nanuq!!! I had to fly to Winnipeg for a day to do a work related course, which was fun, except the timing was a little bad. It was right in [View Full Entry]

Today, september 19th, we did a wine tasting tour around Oliver and Osoyoos. The area here is practically a desert, it rains here less than 200mm per year. Apart from that the conditions apparently are really very good for viniculture. We went to vineyards with the significant names, "See Ya Later Ranch", "Tinhorn Creek Vineyards" and "Nk'Mip Cellars". There are dozens others but you simply cannot do them all. We had some terrific wine tastings, bought a few bottles and enjoyed the surroundings by driving a back road. The last vineyard is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band, there is also [View Full Entry]

monkman provincial park near tumbler ridge, bc is a very scenic area and was well worth the beating me and my truck took. (muffler gone, windshield, headlight, kidneys) headed south thru jasper, down the icefield parkway and into montana. always feels good to get back to the states....mainly because the price of everything drops considerably. spent 2 weeks in western montana and i'm re-grouping in idaho falls. had the good fortune of seeing a black wolf and a great grey owl. the weather's been way to hot so i've been hanging out at the highest elevations i could find. i've learned [View Full Entry]

7am on train from New York to Niagara Falls
Blackpool I mean Niagara Well having arrived on the very nice (very early) Amtrak train, on a beautiful sunny afternoon, we were all ready to have a wash and go explore. However it would seem that Canadian officials were unaware of our plans and of the actual arrival of the train as we waited about an hour for them to put their coffee cups down and come and do boarder checks!! 40 mins after being asked, did we have any gifts for anyone here (no I don’t know the people on the train that well!!!), why are we here, where are [View Full Entry]

Even though today was primarily a travel day (360 miles) I still managed to make several scenic stops and even had a couple of mini-adventures. It was raining when I left Quesnel (Miata top up) but it quit after about an hour (Miata top down for the rest of the day). It was mostly sunny all day with high temps in the mid-70’s; perfect convertible weather! I even had to change into my shorts this afternoon; something I haven’t done in about three weeks. When I reached Prince George yesterday, I turned south on Highway 97 to Quesnel and I continued [View Full Entry]

From Shell: Great day today with a lazy start and then a train trip to Niagara Falls and back. Niagara Falls see a hell of a lot of water through but overall, I think we were both a little underwhelmed. We have been spoiled with remote national parks and places like Milford Sound in NZ - Niagara Falls township is right on the falls and the whole area is really heavily developed and the architecture indicates it has been for decades. However, cant help but be impressed with the sheer amount of water that pours over those falls every minute. We [View Full Entry]

Revelstoke
Early 20th century home in Revelstoke
Friday september 18th. We are now in the wine area in the Okanaga valley. Great. We are now on our way to my cousin Grace, she -and her husband Bert-, lives in the neighbourhood of Seattle. So we have to cross the border with the USA, I hope that we will not have too much hassle. Sunday we will be heading there. Yesterday we had a rest day in Revelstoke, it provided a relief to be there. We walked through the center of the town to sniff the typical atmosphere. Today we arrived at Oliver in wine country! This is a [View Full Entry]

Karen & I meeting for the first time :)
After our visit with Nat's foster family, we had to back track to Parry Sound, then head towards Owen Sound. I was going to meet my sister-in-law. Karen, she is Gord's ( my ex in Whitehorse,YT) sister. Gord and I were together for 14 yrs, and have been seperated for 15 yrs and I have never met Karen. I was a lil nervous but more tickled lol I have heard stories about Karen from Gord, The late Brothers Gar and John. She lives close to Owen Sound. We got there thinking that we are stopping for coffee lol and heading right [View Full Entry]
