A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Our flight to Seattle was faultless and we were both really looking forward to meeting up with Rick and Sharon again. As we collected our baggage we were pounced upon by both of them, Sharon quickly handed Tim a large can of English ale. We were introduced to Ernie one of Sharons old friends from NZ and swiflty the whirlwind that is Rick and Sharon took hold. Firstly Sharon had very kindly arranged a hire car for us at no cost other than the tax and to insure her to drive it back to Vancouver. As Tim sorted out the finer [View Full Entry]

Canada road trip 8th September-4th October 2008 Monday 8th September 2008 After an overnight flight we arrive at Calgary Airport and it’s still about 7pm. The wonders of the lunar cycle! We take an effortless journey from the airport to the hostel: it only cost CAD $2.50 (about £1.25) for the bus and train - an absolute bargain. I wasn’t at all impressed with Hi-Calgary international hostel. Though the staff was helpful (for the most part), we weren’t given towels when we arrived; we had to ask for them. The reception area was welcoming and felt ve [View Full Entry]

Can't believe its been one day away from a hundred that i've been doin this trip for - already?! Back in van city now and feelin the "greyhound thru the night"ness somewhat: its like half eight and i'm trying desperately to put off going to bed so i sleep thru... yeah, ok grandma! Had a pretty eventful "wasted travel day" as, just for a change, i may have erred slightly on the estimated times of arrival and departure for the buses (i will truly be astounded if i manage to get right round the world without missing some major transport form [View Full Entry]

Ryerson University Right from the start it was clear that Ryerson is quite different from the other institutions we had visited. Ryerson is a town centre location and its development master plan includes - urban intensification -building upwards - seedy area in town so plan is to make a more wholesome feel good University - major building work to be done - high density stacks in basement In the library they had a number of interesting job positions: Digital Initiatives librarian Digital support librarian Collection Evaluation librarian We also heard about a new servic [View Full Entry]

The closest I could find to the expression she has when she studies...I can't even start a conversation
For those looking for an update on my progress with HKW…sorry. There’s absolutely nothing. And there will be nothing for the next couple of weeks. It isn’t like I’ve given up…or that our relationship has hit rocky ground…in fact, its something so trivially Asian it makes me want to vomit. She has to study for her midterms so she’s been locked away in a secluded corner of the library all of the last two weeks. Given that her first midterm is on Wednesday of this week, I wonder why she needs to start studying a full week earlier…unti [View Full Entry]

Travel to Ottawa After we left Ryerson we went straight to the airport to catch a flight to Ottawa. I cannot tell you anything about the flight as I fell asleep before we even took off and and only woke upwhen we landed. The Yow airports bus that I had booked was ready and waiting for us. We got to the Marriott in good time to yet changed and get out for dinner. [View Full Entry]

Marriott hotel

Wow... We finally made it to Yoho National Park and the Lake O'Hara area. It's been on our list of things to do for two years and every time we've gone to try and book some accommodation we've been disappointed to find out that everything was booked solid - even the camp sites... We had to get there before it closed for hiking, and before we left... Unfortunately our only option to explore the area was the day-hike option. We thought we'd try and use Charlotte's connections again (which have worked for two years without fail - from heli-skiing, to white [View Full Entry]

We were excited to start our road trip and picked up our rental car first thing in the morning to head for Japser. Driving out of the city was fairly easy, but once we got to Highway No.5 we were cautioned of 'Extreamly Slippery Icy Roads,' and frequently saw these signs until very soon we saw many cars and even a few trucks that had slid off the road. Scary stuff, but we were careful and made it safely to Jasper. Once we arrived in Jasper we went for a drive through town and explored a little around the national park [View Full Entry]
