A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Starting the trip in Canada proved to be tougher than expected. Matt's dizziness took a turn for the worst in New York and after being bedridden for 4 days, we planned to cancel the flight and stay in New York. This was a tough situation as money was low and accommodation was full in New York, so staying appeared to not be an option. Waiting for us at the other end was the wonderfully hospitable Hindley's who we knew would kindly look after us...if we could just get on the flight. Without any dizziness medication, Matt relied on strong sedatives and [View Full Entry]

Morning frost

After a relatively early morning (9.00am Ha Ha) we set off for Fredericton, the Capital of New Brunswick. New Brunswick has a number of tourist routes including the River Valley drive. It was full of the yellow, red and green leaves that made up the fall colours. Along the way we stopped in at the town of Grand Falls in which the centrepiece of downtown are the falls themselves. In our travels the falls are usually a little way out of town, so this was a touch unusual. WE eventually arrived out our host’s place for the night. Dom and a [View Full Entry]

Library and Archives Canada preservation centre visit We spent the morning at the LAC preservation centre in Gatineau. We did not really know what to expect from this visit but it turned out to be fascinating. We met a number of the technical staff carrying out preservation work and digitization projects. We were also taken into the storage containers and had the safety and the control features explained. Amazing building that should be used in a sci-fi film. LAC website [View Full Entry]

Library of Parliament visit Our visit to the Parliament began with a tour of the buildings by one of the public guides. We got to see both the House of Commons and the senate. We were also taken up the memorial tower that has all the names of the war dead in a beautiful book. The pages are turned each day so that all those that lost their lives we remembered during the year. After the public tour we were taken on a special tour of the Parliament library that most visitors are not able to do. The Parliament library was [View Full Entry]

Well after a long plan flight we finally landed in Vancouver. After months of planning the plane flight seemed to take for ever, even though it was not a bad flight at all. We arrived to a 12 degree day with light drizzle, this pretty much sumed up most of the week weather wise. We walked around the city a lot the first afternoon trying to fight off jet lag and taking in a few sights before we went back to the hostel. We stayed in a nice little hostel on Burnaby street in downtown Vancouver. It was a nice little [View Full Entry]
