If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

So, we've officially been a temporary resident of Canada for 2 months now, and I think this is an apt time to write about what we think of Vancouver. We've settled in quite well, both are working full time making a bit of money, and generally living each day as it comes. It's not a fancy life; we didn't land awesome jobs in architecture and film as we fantasized we would, but we're beyond that now and working towards our careers is something we've agreed can wait until we return home to Australia. There's no point doing that here - we're [View Full Entry]

Adieu, Adieu North America » Canada » Quebec » Gaspésie
Well here's my goodbye entry, I've got to keep it short as I've left my packing to the last minute. I'm going to Montreal today, Paris tomorrow and Bamako on Monday. I think my work project in Mali will be in a greenhouse nursing baby saplings. The address I've been given to receive mail is below, however I'm not really sure mail sent to the ministry of agrisculture in Mali will get to me. Ministère de l’Agriculture Direction nationale de l’Agriculture B.P. 1098 Bamako, Mali It's always crazy how quickly the summer goes by, and my time here was no exception. [View Full Entry]

Should have waited for the rain to stop before tackling the Top Of The World Hwy. Got cold and miserable. To get gas in the town of Chicken instead of a chicken burger would have been a good idea. Got to Dawson city in the Yukon with 5 miles to spare. Lesson learned. The spell of long goneby days of the gold rush in Dawson City as in Robert Service, Diamond Tooth Gerties and Jack London. Huge indigenous population. Sense of freedom and harshness, even more laid back than Alaska? [View Full Entry]

Hello all! So this past week marked by departure to France anniversary. One year ago, I was in Paris, France, living the good life - no responsablilties, no work, no problem! I only had to answer to myself; I only had to worry about the core survival basics - finding food and cooking it deliciously, finding shelter and having enough social interaction to be content. All of the above-mentioned tasks could be quickly fulfilled, leaving plenty of time for adventuring. During my first week in France, I met great friends, and quickly improved upon my language skills. As I made my [View Full Entry]

My host Emily at her work place: The Zen-Berry
Arriving in Maple Ridge late in the evening, I received a heartly welcome by my next hosts, Emily and her parents Tom and Suzan. A super nice family living just 40 mins out of Vancouver. I had almost arrived at the West Coast. Two days later Emily gave me a great tour of Vancouver and Vancouver will be the subject of my next blog entry. [View Full Entry]

When we got back from Iceland, the shock of the warm temps in Sioux was enlightening. This is on the trail up to Sioux Mountain. We are sitting on the Canadian Shield in the boreal forest.
Well, hello! Everyone! Dave has certainly left us with some amazing visuals of the Polar Bear and Beluga capital of the world, Churchill, Manitoba. So just to balance out the news coverage, I have taken a few photos of Sioux Lookout (our headquarters) where I am holding the fort with Lilah, our 19 year old cat. When the lupins come out, boy do they bloom! And I just got the tail end of the blooming window of opportunity, back in July. Altho a wet summer was had by all, we are having the most fabulous September ever! I am still picking [View Full Entry]

We got up Friday with the intention of heading to Victoria, provincial capital of British Columbia. Once we got our collective act together, it turned out to be too late to catch the ferry from Port Angeles, which is the shortest route. Further research revealed that if we drove to Anacortes, we could catch a boat that went through the San Juan Islands to a town near Victoria, so we headed north. The trip through the San Juans was very scenic, including a couple of stops at some of the islands. It was a fairly lengthy ride, but we ultimately arrived [View Full Entry]

Various Vancouver The end is near. The last whole day in Vancouver began with a breakfast somewhere down in Robson street, I don't remember the name of the place. We had scrambled eggs, sausages, baked potatoes and toast, which is quite normal if you are Canadian but to our standards quite bizarre. Nonetheless, it provided the necessary energy to cope with the plans we had to rummage about Vancouver. And boy did we do Vancouver. Gastown, where it all began with some nice old buildings dating back to late 1800 and cobblestone streets. From Gastown we went exploring Vancouver's Chinatown and [View Full Entry]
