A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Dawson Creek, BC
Dawson Creek, BC
Beginning of the Alaska Highway
After leaving Jasper, I drove to Grande Cache, AB and spent Friday night in a hotel. I knew that it was time to start racking up some miles and I was anxious to get to the Alaska Highway. The first stop on Saturday was in Dawson Creek, BC, the town where the Alaka Highway starts. I picked up BC, Yukon and Alaka maps there at the visitor center. I drove another 140 miles and decided to camp at Pink Mountain. At the camp, I shared the fire of 2 guys on motorcycles that were also headed to Alaska. One was driving [View Full Entry]

Sometimes you just have to...
I left Grand Prairie at about 8 o'clock Monday morning bound for Dawson Creek, BC. The 130 km ride was very enjoyable, there was not a cloud to be seen and the temperature was about 10 C. The single lane highway was in good shape and provided a few wildlife sightings, a deer that got a little too close and what I think was either a wolf or a large coyote. Pat R stayed behind to get a new tire for the back of his ride. At 10:30, I received a text message from him telling me that he had located [View Full Entry]

Dawson Creek, BC
Mile Zero

Last day in richmond with lots of fond memories. There was lots of good eating. Wrapped up my stay with a visit to a gelateria with 218 flavors. Yes, that's right 218 flavors. YUMO!!!! Between the seafood and dim sums and Chinese food, the stomach is fulfilled! And I am ready to head back home. My pants can't take it any more! The gardens in the Nitobe Memorial Gardens were very serene and the canopy walk in the botanical gardens were fun and "adventurous." All in all, this was a tame trip by touristy standards but then again, I guess that's [View Full Entry]

By the way, If you ever make this trip, I highly suggest you plan to bypass the town of Watson Lake. Suffice to say, it’s a dump. That opinion may be influenced by the hotel I stayed in and the lousy internet connection. I heard from Lucy about this and she enjoyed her stop here. After leaving Watson Lake, I stopped at a great place for breakfast, called Nugget City, with a pretty cool gift shop and a great café: the Wolf It Down Café. Thanks again to Bryan for loaning me his copy of “Milepost.” It is THE bible for [View Full Entry]

Day 8. 2925Km Today was a day of indecision. It's supposed to rain all around this area for the rest of the week. Where did I want to be. My original plan was to camp in New Brunswick close to the Confederation Bridge and ride over. If there was more than one days entertainment I'd motel it or stay in a B&B for a night. The weather forecast put an end to those plans so I thought about staying in Moncton figuring there would be plenty of things to do while the week passed. For a moment I decided I'd head [View Full Entry]

Day 1: Saskatoon-Edmonton: 524 km Day 2: Edmonton Grande Prairie: 459 km Total to date: 983 km Here we go again, another trip, another blog. If you missed the last one, you can catch it at www.mytb.org/patanderin. Pat R and I left Saskatoon on Saturday at noon, as we had planned. The weather wasn't that great, it's been an odd spring weather wise, with overnight frost in early June. So I bundled up, plugged in my vest, turned on my heated grips and set off for Edmonton, a ride that is just over 500 km. Pretty uneventful trip, we stayed at [View Full Entry]

...when we had to head home. We drove from Sedona to Phoenix just a week ago but not before we finished seeing some of the sights in Sedona. Lucille Ball had a vacation home in Sedona, very high on a hill top just down the street from where we stayed in Sedona. Lucille is long gone but her daughter apparently still comes to Sedona on occasion and she has installed a mannequin of Lucille on one of the porches. So if you peak thru the trees, you can see her waving. Of course, we had to check out the Olde UFO [View Full Entry]

When I made my decision to return to Canada, I struggled with the thought of "settling down." To my nomadic mind this implied immediate marriage, pursuit of a serious career, home-ownership and a plethora of other dreadful sounding traps for the free spirit. Stressed by the thought of instant immobility, I spent a long time ignoring my own declaration that I needed to come home, searching spastically for jobs that would keep me on the move. Numerous lengthy discussions with Dad in Ireland assuaged some of my unfounded fears that I was closing the door on all future adventures as we [View Full Entry]

Horshoe Bay ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo,Vancouver Island
June 5, Friday This morning we headed southwest to the greater Vancouver area to visit Deb's siblings. I rode in a car for the first time since riding in the mini-van taxi in Corozal Town, Belize back in April. Prior to that, the last time in a cage was on January 31, in my Toyota truck getting out of town. It's a slightly weird feeling, that's for sure. To get anywhere in BC involves going around lakes and mountains, with occasional across lakes, and through mountains. We took the quickest route through Kelowna and Merritt, but it still took a tad [View Full Entry]
