A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Travelogue - Day 3 Boarding Golden Princess in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Hello everyone! Sunday, September 20, 2009 Sunday morning was gorgeous in Vancouver when we woke. There was blue sky above with a few spotted clouds. It was a leisurely morning for Jim and me as we chose to sleep in a bit and then go to Starbucks for a little breakfast before meeting up with Rob and Christie for the four of us to head off to board the Golden Princess. Rob and Christie what sounded to be a really nice walk back down to Gastown and then stopped [View Full Entry]

Travelogue - Day 4 Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Hello everyone! - This is being sent to you on Tuesday morning as we had no cell phone coverage in Nanaimo. Monday, September 21, 2009 Last night around 5:00 p.m. we sailed out of Vancouver and headed up the coast for awhile after passing under the Lions Gate Bridge going through the narrows alongside Stanley Park in Vancouver. There was a huge sail away party; the majority of people were up on the Lido deck along with the band playing the Macarena and YMCA and them all dancing and having a grand time. [View Full Entry]

Having left the farm in the Kootenays, I headed for Banff. But lifts were harder to get than I'd found previously, and I only made it as far as Revelstoke on the first day. This was a fairly small town that looked like it came alive in the winter, and was a big ski/snowboard destination. My experience of it was a hostel full of young australians, and a sports bar where I had dinner and watched Liverpool beat Leeds without any commentary. The next day wasn't much better in terms of lifts, but I did manage to get to Banff, and [View Full Entry]

Travelogue - Day 5 & Day 6 Victoria, British Columbia, Canada & Day at Sea Hello everyone! - Tuesday, September 22, 2009 We arrived early in Victoria, BC and because we were only in port for about a half a day, our tour of Butchart Gardens, Wine & Chocolate left around 9:00 a.m. The day was gloriously clear and about 70° outside with no winds. The ride out to Butchart Gardens was quite enjoyable with our tour guide, Mike. He was an elderly Irishman who was full of information about the area giving us tidbits of history and all sorts of [View Full Entry]

Tomorrow's the big day when we leave for our Botswana adventure. First we fly to England for a few days to get over jet lag and visit the newlyweds (Richard’s daughter and her husband), and then on to Botswana. England is a 9-hour overnight flight. Then it’s another 11-hour overnight flight to Johannesburg, wait 3 hours, then a 2-hour flight to Maun, Botswana. And we’re there. We're finally all packed. Kayla needed a larger duffle than the small one we each hoped to use, but hers was full to almost bursting and that's not a way to start a trip. So [View Full Entry]

So, we've officially been a temporary resident of Canada for 2 months now, and I think this is an apt time to write about what we think of Vancouver. We've settled in quite well, both are working full time making a bit of money, and generally living each day as it comes. It's not a fancy life; we didn't land awesome jobs in architecture and film as we fantasized we would, but we're beyond that now and working towards our careers is something we've agreed can wait until we return home to Australia. There's no point doing that here - we're [View Full Entry]
