A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. I know this doesn't really count as a full on travel trip... But you know what? I think it had all the components of a big trip to some far off land... Travel, Adventure, Navigation difficulties, New sights sounds and locations... So I think it counts! My (Canadian) Thanksgiving weekend to Sylvan Lake The Drive North After a grueling week of school and work, my boyfriend and I decided to take a small road trip up to Edmonton followed by a short visit to his cabin in Sylvan Lake, Alberta (its about half way between Calgary and Edmonton, and about a [View Full Entry]

We left the cozy atmosphere of Rick and Sharons and headed for the rockies. It was Monday morning and the traffic was a little busy getting out of the city but within 30 minutes we were enjoying some pretty stunning scenery. We had a lot of miles to cover and we made good time to the town of Kamloops which we hit around midday. Stopping for a burger and drink we were back on the road again within 30 minutes. Taking a bit of a slower pace now we had some miles under our belt we enjoyed the views of the [View Full Entry]

Even with the sat nav that Rick and Sharon gave us we still couldn’t find their house so fortunately Sharon came to meet us to take us back. You remember I said that they are a whirlwind, well our return was no different. Within 20 minutes of being in the house Sharon was whisking us off to one of the movie sets in town. We’ve never been given the opportunity to do this so we were not sure what to expect. It was to the set of the new Henry Winkler (the fonz) movie, so we headed to the location on [View Full Entry]

It was quite late by the time we arrived in Buffalo as we had to fly through New York to get here. We got a taxi straight to our hotel and were just sat chilling watching a bit of TV when Sharon called to say that she had sent the Fedex and the wallet would arrive by lunchtime the next day. This meant we could still go and hire the car and once again Sharon had found out where we could go that was close to us and it turned out Avis was just down the road. With all that sorted [View Full Entry]

It is almost time for us, Ryan and Kerry, to finally flee the country and decided to have one final debauchery of a night before we left. The century house restaurant and nightclub was more than happy to play host to our final night of drunken shenanigans. After having enjoyed a nice three course meal and many litres of alcohol in the restaurant portion of the building, we then made our way to the dance floor upstairs where the drinking continued, the vomitting commenced and the bodies became a playground. Here are some pics from our final night of partying in [View Full Entry]

I just want to share some photos we took while visiting the Matapedia Valley and the Baie-des-Chaleurs area of the Gaspé Peninsula at the beginning of October. The Notre Dame Mountains are an extension of the Appalachians that stretch from Sherbrooke to the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula in the province of Quebec. [View Full Entry]

Edmonton doesn’t have a reputation as being the most happening city, and well, that is a fair enough point. We had booked into the hostel for 5 nights and after the second day we were scouring the tourist magazines and the Lonely Planet for things to do over the rest of our time there. The hostel was near Whyte Avenue; a rather funky part of town; and as such has the requisite funky shops, bars and restaurants that two Australian Gen Yers are attracted to. We visited the Alberta Legislature building and took in the free guided tour, in which we [View Full Entry]

In order to work for NCL, it is a requirement to complete a basic safety course. Included in the course is first aid, firefighting, lifeboat/liferaft training, emergency procedures, etc. We started our training last week, have more this week, and then we finish with us having to flip a liferaft over in the water once we get to warmer waters (Bermuda). Lucky for us, having Halifax as a port meant that we got the opportunity to go to some special training facility to FIGHT FIRES! When Lisa and Katelyn did their safety training, they simply got to crawl through the crew [View Full Entry]

Driving the icefield Pathway to Banff was an amazing experience. The mountains and glaicers were spectacular and after every bend in the road there was yet another spectacular mountain to take your breath away. Lake Louise was one stop we couldn’t miss, so we took the turn off and followed along with the other tourists to the very famous Lake Louise. No surprise at all, it was absolutely stunning. We did the photo thing and took in the amazing view (the glacier above the lake was also spectacular) and decided to make our quick escape from the tourists and continue on [View Full Entry]
