Raven and creatures statueI don't know the actual name of this carving.. Really should have listened! I do know that it's on the $20 bill though
So I’m sitting in my bed, annoyed that I’m awake at 7:30, after a night out. My sleeping mask keeps falling off and landing on the floor, so it’s of no use to me when the sun comes peeking through our open blinds. Ugh. Don’t think I’ll bother trying to go back to sleep.
So last night was fun, we went to the Beaver (the bar at the bottom of the other hostel) where I had the world’s smallest chicken parmigiana. Parma connoisseurs around the world would have thrown their arms up in disgust, but it was alright. We had a few drinks there, as is customary, but then we finally moved onto another bar! Baby cheeses, finally! We ventured as far as the Irish bar on the corner of the street, and that was pretty good. There was an old guy playing acoustic and he was awesome, had a very Sting-esque voice. I reckon he would have been in some band in the 70’s that never quite made it. I think we left Doolin’s at about 1:30? It was good to have the opportunity to leave at our leisure, not at midnight on the dot, when the Beaver closes.
I was drinking pints at Doolin’s, so I was very much on the way to being hammered. I feel a little drunk now actually.
On our way home we were lucky enough to be stopped by a hobo who decided to draw us (what is with this city and everyone wanting to draw me?) We of course didn’t have to take the drawing if we didn’t want it, but how could we refuse when this piece of cardboard with characters bearing little to no resemblance to us was thrust in our face? Sneaky buggar.. I wonder what he would have done if we didn’t buy it from him.. The day before I had made eye contact with a hobo who then asked for money, as they do. We all tried to ignore him, but then Vanessa laughed. The hobo got feisty, thinking she was laughing at him because he was hungry, and yelled at us a little before finally walking away and smashing a bottle on a bin. Gah! If we were on a less-busy street corner, I think we would have had that bottle in our backs. The toothless guy from Toronto the night before was all because
BlossomsFor Tara.. It probably would have turned out better if I was closer to the flowers, but the tree was too tall for me!
I had made eye contact too, and the guy on the bus who told me adamantly that “Waltzing Matilda” was the Australian national anthem. Really must look at the ground in future!
So yesterday Erin and I went to the Museum of Anthropology at UBC (University of British Columbia). UBC is such a nice university.. it’s got blossom trees everywhere (got that photo for you Tara!), views of the ocean, mountains, it’s just pretty. The museum was awesome too, it’s full of American Indian things, totem poles and the like. Very interesting how they make everything too, using hot rocks and water to steam the wood, and then bending it into shape. Clever!
It’s almost free breakfast time and I am in dire need of some food.. Today I might go to the bank to sort out the credit card, then we’re going to the observation tower, out for dinner to Whitespot (which looks kinda like a Sizzler to me) and then onto a comedy club. Should be fun!
xx
