Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Quebec City and Montreal Yes Poutine was eaten and arteries were hardened. I forgot everything people told me about THE place to eat poutine so think i may have missed the best version of this dish... when you think about it the chips and gravy is not a strange concept to us Aussies its the cheese curds that throw me. I couldnt get over how 'french' the province of Quebec really is and it kind of makes more sense of the whole French separatist thing here in Canada. But is is beautiful So much like being in Paris itself. Old buildings, [View Full Entry]

Hi, I'm in Montreal at the moment, just chillin' checking out the sights. I'm staying in a hostel which is pretty cool. I've met alot of people here, people of Germany and Switzerland etc and I have been out in the city a few times with them. I've been to watch a couple of Ice Hockey Games here also which as been great - something different and the people go nuts over it. I also went to see the WWE Wrestling - Smackdown and RAW also when I first got here which was really cool, alot different then seeing it on [View Full Entry]

We arrived to Europe away from Europe today. Montreal is actually the perfect blend of American and European culture. On top of that everyone speaks french so it makes it even more "exotic"! The first thing we explored was part of the underground city. You can basically live underground if need be. Everything you would want from malls, to banks to flower shops to transportation can be found underground. Most of the modern part of Montreal's downtown can be walked underground. This is of course due to the frigid winters they have. The work it must have taken to make this [View Full Entry]

The bus left on time. We were going to have a 3 hours stop-over in Ottawa, the nation’s capital, in the middle of the night but we should be in Montreal by the morning. When we got to Ottawa I asked the bus driver where we would catch the Montreal connection. “That’s it over there.” he said pointing to the bus next to us. I went over and the new driver confirmed it. But what about the 3 hour stop-over? I have no idea because we got straight on it. “So what time do we get to Montreal?” I asked. “2:30am” [View Full Entry]

I'm back in Montreal after a two days excursion to Quebec City which is three hours by train from Montreal. Unfortunately the excursion didn't turn out to be as nice as I had hoped for. There was nothing wrong with Quebec City, quite the opposite actually, it's one of the nicest, oldest and cosiest cities in North America, the problem was the weather which was cold (only 6-8 degrees), windy, grey and rainy. And as if that wasn't enough, the evening before I left Montreal I felt I was about to get a cold, which I also got the following day, [View Full Entry]

hi everyone, so since last i wrote alot of miles have been clocked up The first of innumerable unforgettable and special moments of the following three weeks happened as Aiden emerged from the gates of Auckland International Airport. It was sooooooooooo AMAZING to see him again and under such circumstances, thanks babe! Auckland holds many surprises: Rangitoto Island just off the coast and our Thomas the tractor engine journey to the summit for some really cool views of the city skyline; A rendezvous at the theatre to see the Kiwi performance of Take Me Out; a comedic tradegy about the [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

I am in Montreal now, in the French-speaking part of Canada in the Quebec province. Montreal is such a nice city with a charming "old town", I really like the place! It is quite interesting that they speak French here, and everything is of course in French (signs, ads, posters etc). It is a bit like being back in France, but in North America, and while some things feel very familiar others don't. So it's both nice and sometimes confusing to be here ;) I find the dialect a little tricky to follow at times, although most of the time it's [View Full Entry]

The Airbus A330 plane to Montreal at Toronto airport.
A quick flight report for yeasterday's flight from Toronto to Montreal. It was only a one hour flight, but I was happy to learn that one flight a day on this route is operated by an Airbus A330 which they usually use for Transatlantic flights, thus it would give me the chance to sample the Air Canada longhaul business class product as well (or at least the seat). The daily departure is also scheduled conveniently at 5 pm from Toronto. Took a bus from downtown Toronto to Lester B Pearson airport and the brand new terminal 1 which opened just a [View Full Entry]

Montreal was a cool but a bit strange as everyone speaks French (as they do throughout province of Quebec) as a first language and all the signs are in French but it looks like any other Canadian city. A group of girls from the UK that we had met in Ottawa were staying in the same hostel as us in Montreal so we all went for a night out in the famous party city (or so it is called). Was a good night in Montréal which started a period of random events including meeting a guy wandering around with a potato [View Full Entry]
