Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

J'ava [View Full Entry]

Mur Azteques

Day 91..... We were welcomed across the Canadian boarder (without being interrogated for a change!) into New Brunswick. Our first stop was Fundy National Park, famous for the world's largest tides! As the tourist season had come to an end, it felt as though we had the whole park to ourselves. We made the most of the remaining sunshine and kept up with our walking, until Martin spotted a rather 'lonely' looking golf course! As 'pitch n' putt' is more Angela's cup of tea, she played the role of caddy (don't get too used to that Martin, we were on holiday!). [View Full Entry]

Montreal After checking out of our cell, we went across the river to the province (or is it state?) of Quebec. Yes French was most definitely predominant here and yes the people were just as.....polite. Mmm. Anyway in Gatineau we visited the Museum of Civilisation to learn about the aboriginal people of Canada. Went staight from there to Montreal. Our downfall with the whole driving thing was actually getting into the cities. Other than that we were perfectly fine. Everyone want to go on a road trip with us now?! Anyway in Montreal we run into 2 Welsh brothers that we [View Full Entry]

Something Old, S.T. New, S.T. Frenchie, S.T. Cool. Montreal has all of the above, which made it a good choice for me to visit. I like cities that have some sort of history in it’s past and tangible aspects of it, which in Montreal case, are it’s many old, French structures. Also evident, were the British influence, who of course, won the war, so many Victorian Houses were constructed and thankfully preserved. Having modern buildings also is not a bad thing, of which there were quite a few of. It’s nothing like Toronto’s or Hong Kong's, but enough to give the [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Quebec City in the late afternoon. Prior to my arrival I did not have big expectations for this city, however I was proven wrong. Quebec City is a quaint little town. There are not so many attractions, however this city gives you a certain feeling. It seemed to be a bit more French than Montreal. We ate a crepe restaurant which was my first time at an exclusive crepe restaurant. The next day we woke and set out to tour the city. We walked to get our croissant and latte and headed through the city walls. We first [View Full Entry]

Quebec City

Who knows, this conversation might have taken place 300 years ago in a tavern in this beautiful city of Quebec, founded by Samuel de Chaplain for the booming Fur Trade. When I learned that the River I was looking at, from the Broadwalk like structure called Dufferin Terrace, was named the St. Lawerence River; I started to reminisce of my school days in American History class. Unlike Math and other classes, history really stimulated my imagination, and names like Jacque Cartier, Samuel de Chaplain, Hudson Trading Co., and St. Lawrence River put me in a Walter Mitty state of mind.
