Gali came to visit me in Quebec City during my second week. It was a great way to start the semester since we were able to explore the city together and do some of the touristy stuff.
She arrived mid-day and we quickly headed out towards Parc national Jacques-Cartier for a picnic and afternoon hike.
After driving for just over an hour, we entered the provincial park and found a nice spot (around marker KM 12) for a picnic lunch. We took our time under the sun surrounded by the green scenery and rolling river. After the picnic we drove out to KM 16 where the trail "Les Loups" starts. On the way, we saw some cars pulled over and curious to see what the fuss was all about, we pulled over too and there was a moose! So cool!
By the time we got to trail, it was a little later than we had anticipated. Given that the route is not a loop and you come back the way you came, we were able to judge the amount of time it would take us to get back. Using that, we set a final time for when we
had to turn around as we didn’t want to hike in the dark. We were 3 minutes from the deadline when we reached the trail’s end. There was a push at the end to make it to top and it was worth it because the view was beautiful!! The scenery along the way was nice but there were not many view points.
That night we headed for a nice dinner and walked around Ste Roch (pronounced like Saint Rock). This area of Quebec City is continuing to draw a young professional crowd and is the home of many popular restaurants and some theatres.
The next day we went to Vieux-Quebec (Old Quebec) where we walked around and explored. Lunch at Paillard was tasty and we splurged on dessert - it just looked sooo tasty.
After Vieux-Quebec we were heading to Chutes Montmorency (Montmorency Waterfalls) when out of the right of the car we saw some beautiful homes on the ridge of a cliff of l'Ile d'Orleans and decided to go for it and explore! So instead of turning towards the waterfall we went right towards the island.
The island is full of apple orchards, cornfields and
other forms of agriculture. We went on somewhat of a cidrerie tour as we hopped from one to the next - tasting ciders, wines and other goodies. We also tasted some salmon cooked on an open fire in a traditional local manner. Our last stop on the island was for some delicious corn – satisfying a craving we always have!
Crossing back to the mainland, we then stopped at Chutes Montmorency. We started at the bottom and then drove up and saw the falls from the top. A worthwhile visit.
After the long day, we opted to pick up dinner; thai food... we were missing our SouthEast adventure and decided to be nostalgic - instead of going out as we had had a fun adventure filled day.
We had a delicious breakfast the next morning outside under the sun - a great way to finish a super fun weekend.
