Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

I have fallen in love with Quebec City. Quebec was founded in 1608 and it is preparing for its 400th anniversary next year, which it will host events every day of the year. Vieux-Quebec is a world heritage site and is 95% French speaking. Nearly 9 million tourists visit Quebec every year and I can see why its won many awards and been voted as one of the top tourist destinations in the Americas. Vieux-Quebec (old Quebec) is right on our doorstep from the hostel. There are many quaint and charming streets with shops and restaurants all lined up next to [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, sorry this has been a long time coming. As I mentioned, we have been in and out of internet contact for the past couple of weeks, and it takes quite a long time to load all of the photos up here. So, we arrived in Quebec City and started the morning with breakfast with our friends Pat and Clo. They both speak French as their first language, but speak English reasonably well. (By the end of the week, we had picked up a few French words and phrases) We spent the first afternoon walking around the old City. It [View Full Entry]

Hello folks Pumpkin season is upon us. Everywhere we go there are pumpkins! honestly I've never seen so many - and there are heaps of varieties and all different shapes and sizes. Some are big enough to make boats out of. So there is no escaping the approaching Halloween!! Montreal was not the place to experience the North American tradition of Thanksgiving (apparently it's too American) so I'm still yet to experience the celebrated pumpkin pie (although apparently you can buy it in a can!). Quebec city is a quaint town. The cobbled streets and old buildings give it a very [View Full Entry]

In late September, after spending a month in Bangor, Maine, we headed for Quebec City to meet friends Jim and Chris and begin our fall “leaf peep.” While some maintenance and repairs were being done at the service facility, we toured the Prevost factory to see bus shells just like ours being constructed from the ground up. Quebec City was delightful. The historic walled city will be 400 years old next year, and we spent a few days sightseeing and enjoying some fine cuisine. The old city is very European in feel; and of course French is the dominant language. Once [View Full Entry]

Hi there. Im back in Quebec City for the conference which started on Sunday. Quebec city has some wonderful buildings in the old section and lots of very French shops, cafes, cafes, cafes and cafes! The conference is a little disapopointing in terms of relevance of speakers but Ive met a few researchers that have been very helpful with info and interested in my work, which has been encouraging. I went to a talk yesterday with a japanese professor that mumbled pretty much unitelligbly, hunched over the lectern reading off his notes. Each of his slides had enough info for 10 [View Full Entry]

Well here I am in front of Quebec City's most famous landmark.
Hey all, Joe is in Quebec City to run his 18th marathon, and I was invited to come along with him and his wife Elizabeth. It is a great relief to escape from the Southland heat; Quebec’s high temperature is in the mid 80s. After a connecting flight which was originated in Boston, we finally arrived in Quebec City with a smaller airplane. And yes, this is my first time in Canada, and I am excited to see what our northern neighbor has to offer. Quebec is a Canadian province with heavily French influence, and the Old World feeling of Quebec [View Full Entry]

Cirque trip on my way home. I am not sure why this did not show, up, but I wanted the Canada map to show up on my blog as being a country visited. I know it is silly, so I am going to quietly publish this blog and picture from my visit to Quebec City Canada back in summer. [View Full Entry]

Day 53, Monday 16 July 2007 - Quebec Today we ventured into 'Old Quebec', which is an absolutely gorgeous little part of this city. New Quebec apparently isn't much newer than old Quebec, but this part is just so pretty and quaint, plus really clean, its great to wander about. We first booked a 2.5 hour walking tour of the area, as well as a 1.5 hour cruise up the St Laurence River. We had time for breakfast before the walking tour, so went to this pretty little cafe across from a pretty little park and ordered the most divine [View Full Entry]
