Québec City Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

On pourrait y passer plusieurs semaines. On comprend pourquoi tant de gens y navigue. [View Full Entry]

Quebec City was truly amazing. It is the only walled city in North America and was celebrating it's 400th anniversary this summer. Ninety-five percent of it's inhabitants speak French as their first language and it seemed as though half spoke English too. Getting around was challenging because all the signs were in French. We stayed in a great Youth Hostel and walked everywhere. Inside the walled city there were street performances and great restaurants. Everything was made of stone and lit up at night. People were eating outside at night and we felt like we were in Europe. The next day [View Full Entry]

August in Québec [View Full Entry]

I still love Quebec! Of all the places I have lived over the last forty years, including my twenty years in British Columbia, this province still stirs something deep inside more than any of the others. Something must get in your blood when you are born and raised here. I can't explain it is but I can feel it every time I return to visit. The history, the countryside, the people, the art and culture, the signature architecture and even the countless dairy farms that dot the landscape with their characteristic old barns and silos. Vancouver and Quebec City are not [View Full Entry]

The bus ride from Halifax to Quebec City was the worst yet. The first leg was alright, I got a seat to myself so managed to stretch out and get about an hour of sleep. Score. From there it got worse though. There were kids on there with their electronic toys. I understand that they need to be entertained, but really, do the rest of us need to hear their DVDs and computer games? Eff off and let me sleep. I sat next to a shy, awkward girl for the most part of the journey. She was alright, at first I [View Full Entry]

Ugh. Not having a good day today. I arrived very early this morning and the guy at the front desk was a bit of a dick, but eventually he was OK. Then this morning another receptionist was a dick too, apparently they're all rude to the English speakers. Effers. I didn't get much sleep so I think that's the reason for how I'm feeling. I'm on the verge of tears as I write this, ugh. I'm kinda sick of being alone. I mean I find people to have conversations with for a few hours or days and that's nice, but I'm [View Full Entry]

Quebec is one of those cities that impresses you from the time you arrive, which is a big call after a journey that's taken 27 hours door to door. Although our arrival in Toronto on the way is equally imprinted in my mind, but that was only because the pilot tried to leave a Zorro mark on the runway as he landed. There's nothing like a left turn, right turn, left turn as you touchdown! But the landing in Quebec was much less spooky. Today was the first time that the rest of the crew got a look at the site [View Full Entry]

Well after leaving Winnipeg and jumping on a plane we headed to Hamilton (Hamilton being about halfway between Toronto and Niagara). We picked up our car and then proceeded to head off to Niagara Falls by what I like to describe as the most scenic way possible. Niagara Falls in really tacky especially around Clinton Hill (Think Cavill Ave gone mental). After we got over out initial shock we walked around to the falls which are amazing! The next day we headed up to Niagara on the lake. Talk about complete opposites, it was a beautiful little picture postcard town surrounded [View Full Entry]
