Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Okay, so here's my take on the last couple of weeks - thanks for stealing my thunder Dave! We're back in Canada after a really lovely stay in Dodgeville, Wisconsin - big thanks to Laura and Brian for their kind hospitality. It was really lovely having a home-from-home for a while to recharge our batteries! Madison was really pretty and had a nice cool vibe about it. We had a few drinks in the student union there, which is right on the lake - it was a gorgeous setting and we watched the sun go down over the water. Definitely the [View Full Entry]

Dave again. I know Tracey has been preparing a blog entry summarising where we've been over the past couple of weeks - so I'll leave the details to her. Update on the beer front! Toronto's Steam Whistle beer has muscled it's way into the top 3. Probably not quite toppling Wisconsin's Edil Pils from the top spot - but I'd say it's in 2nd place ahead of Sammie Adams. We visited the brewery after going up the CN Tower whilst in Toronto & they were giving away free beer. Didn't seem to mind us going back for quite a few refills [View Full Entry]

Trekkin'

North America » Canada » Quebec » Québec City
Hey all, So we are trekkin around at the moment. We crossed Canada, at least 5000k's in 2 and a half days. Fun huh? All this on a Greyhound bus.......... So Canada is a lot like Australia, lots and lots of flat, flat, flat farmland. The biggest difference is the colour. It is all so green out here, green, water and swamp. On the bus we went past a Bison reserve and I saw a herd of wild bison, Bec was asleep. We stayed at a really hippie hostel last night. Groovy man (but how do you say that in French?) There are days when my email is just loaded with all kinds of goodies. I can join in a debate going on between left and right-wing homeschoolers about a list of books that should not be read, I can get directions to go see a rare white buffalo , I can track those items I ordered from LL Bean. The living gets easy when I’m winding down the school year. Well, I never actually ring the “dismissal” bell at our school, we just switch gears from being bookworms to traveling fools. We h [View Full Entry]

Well hello from Canada!! We are currently in Toronto, started out by headed up the New England Coast through Connecticut and Maine where we stopped for lunch. Nat and I made a salad in the grocery store in an effort to be good! Before we knew it we were at the boarder where we did some duty free shopping and had our passports checked - they pulled a few of the dodge looking characters aside for more questioning before they let them through, fortunately I was not one of them!! We then continued through to Quebec City, Canada’s French speaking province. [View Full Entry]

Grant & That 4 Litre Beer
The Mural Worth $300,000

The first time I took a long trip was about 1.5 years ago. I drove from LA, CA to Quebec, Canada and back in 7 days. It was a 7500 Mile trip and I drove there in 2.5 days, stayed there for 2 days and drove back in 2.5 days. I didn't sleep the entire week, I barley ate as I only had $950 for this whole trip, and gas took us $600 of that. I ate only beef jerky the entire time and spent the rest of the money on drinks and smokes. The most I had ever driven before [View Full Entry]

Vieux-Quebec ("Old Town") is a U.N.E.S.CO. world heritage site. Quebec City is the only North American fortified city north of Mexico whose walls still exist. "Kebec" is the Algonquin (aboriginal NE Canadians) word for "where the river narrows". French explorer Jacques Cartier built a fort here in 1535, and then returned to France. Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 [View Full Entry]
