Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Ottawa was very relaxing and proved to be a great stepping stone for my visit to montreal. My visit coinciding with the 'Just for laughs comedy festival' (there's a festival every week in summer). I think I got one of the best though. This place has so much going for it and I only wished I had more time to have checked the place out more. Not letting time dictate my enjoyment I found myself travelling by foot through all the streets, along the F1 track, up hills and into various buildings of interest with a great girl called April from [View Full Entry]

Short But Sweet

I apologise for not being so consistent with my updates as of late, the last two days and technically the three before have been very full and busy leaving me no time to give you any details about what I've been up to. However, I will really briefly let you know a few of the things that have happened which I either haven't mentioned before or haven't hevn't had time to bring up. I've met these two travellers, one from New Jersey and the other from Switzerland, and they met up two years ago because Chris, the Swiss, has been involved [View Full Entry]

The France of Canada
The France of Canada
This is typical of the spectacular scenery in Old Montreal. I love this place!
Today was supposed to be a day of relaxation, to catch up with myself after having so many un-routine nights spent travelling and staying up late. And it sort of was. I must refer you to the previous days update, if only to see the pictures that I nowe have. And I'm updating this one before that one because I want any readers to see that I am alive and in case I don't finish yesterdays (Which is a highly likely possibility ;) ). So I fell asleep at a rather awkward time yesterday, as after the internet cafe situated inside [View Full Entry]

My Lovely Wrap
Notre Dame Or Not?

And now I can add another country to my short list. I won't name it 'Places I've conquered' because I don't exactly count what I've been doing as enslaving a whole nation under my rule, and I won't call it 'Russell's places of where I've been' because that sounds very, VERY immature and the grammar is wrong. Instead, I'll just put the title at the top which reads 'Places to go back' because ultimately that's what I'll be doing. Did I mention to anybody that I was going to the USA in my third year at University? Well, that's really a [View Full Entry]

Bonjour!

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
On my way to Israel, I had an overnight layover in Montreal. I got in late, after a confusing shuttle ride from the airport that involved a bus transfer onto a minibus only slightly larger than my suitcase. But my room was fantastic. Dark hardwood floors and white furniture (aahhh...) I ventured down to the neighborhood late night cafe and got some yummy fresh homemade potato chips. The next afternoon, I spent a few hours travelling around Vieux-Montreal (that's Old Montreal for you non-French speakers out there). I had a great time just walking around and looking at the architecture. W [View Full Entry]
