This was our last day in Quebec city as well as being the day that we would have the drive home to endure (that one is never as much fun!). This meant that we would try to cram in a couple of things before leaving but all the while remaining mindful of the time as we did not want to get home too late. We had resigned ourselves to the fact that we would not be taking a scenic route home because it would just take too much time ... unfortunately.
Our first stop would be at Ste-Anne de Beaupré to see the basilica. Asley had never seen a church this big and he was quite taken with the paintings in the Immaculate Conception Chapel. And there definitely was reason to be taken with them! I was very much taken with the mosaic work which always amazes me. It always brings the question of how long it would have taken to do all of this intricate work. We were lucky in that we got there relatively early so it was very quiet. You could also see that they were setting up for an upcoming concert. I believe that it was
Ginette Reno performing ... wow her voice in that type of surrounding and those acoustics must be insane.
We circled the grounds a bit but we were a bit conscious of time. So we hopped in the car and headed towards l'Ile d'Orleans. We slowly made our way around the island stopping here and there for a bit of a break or for a photo opportunity. I unfortunately missed a few though as there was no easy way to stop on the side of the road without causing a ten car pile up!!
It was then time to say goodbye to Quebec city. We made our way back on the highway 40 (so glad we took the scenic route on the way there!!) with only a couple of stops along the way. First in Batiscan to put gas where someone had to come to explain to us how to use these old time gas pumps ... oh the city folk ... not too bright. I had completely forgotten about the days when you had to flip the thing up to get the gas going!!!
And I love these small towns because the locals are always entertaining as
can be. I got to chatting with one woman and she was just hilarious. When I saw her again in the parking lot of the ice cream place next door (yes we stopped for soft serve ... didn't take long for Asley to notice that Quebecers love their soft serve ice cream!!), she rolled down her window and said "I've never seen you around here but I just want to say that you are just so sweet ... it was fun talking to you". Awwww how nice!!
And our last stop would be in Rigaud to initiate Asley to the art of the Quebec steamed hot dog! After he heard me order in French, he asked me how to pronounce it ... to which I replied ... "hot dog steamé". Mmmmm .... probably not a good first lesson in French!
