Northport, PEI
marina in the fog 31 July, 2013
It was foggy yesterday morning, so we weren’t in a big hurry to get going. Bob and Gena came over (all the way from next door) and we ate bacon and blueberry pancakes. The blueberries were from their wild blueberry plants in Florida. Then we headed out for a day of sightseeing on Prince Edward Island.
We drove west on Highway 2 to Portage, then took Hwy 12, the North Cape Coastal Drive. We stopped at Northport on the Gulf of St. Lawrence to see the lighthouse there. We spotted a lighthouse and drove over. Unfortunately, it was a fake lighthouse next to the community center, but we got some nice pictures of the harbor, in spite of the fog. We finally spotted the real lighthouse just visible through the fog and got a few pictures. Then on up the coast we went, to North Cape, where there is another lighthouse and a wind farm. At North Cape the Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence meet.
We started back south along the coast, but found out there weren’t many views of the water and it was past lunchtime, so we headed inland to
Mill River. We found a KFC there and had lunch and got a lot of information about the Potato Museum in O’Leary. Since we love potatoes and we got such a kick out of the way the lady pronounced puh-day-do, we drove on over to O’Leary to check it out. We decided upon arrival that $8 per person admission was too high to see some old farm machinery, so after taking our pictures in front of the giant padado, we came on back to the campground. We had left a pork loin in barbeque sauce in the crock pot and had an enjoyable dinner. Oh yeah, Gena did stop and buy some world famous PEI potatoes from a farmer on the way back and we had boiled spuds with our barbeque. After supper we went down to the edge of the bay and took pictures of the sunset.
This morning we had quick breakfasts and headed out around 8:45 for another day of seeing the sights. This time we headed east, first going through what is called the Central Coast Drive which includes the area known as Anne of Green Gables country. We took pictures at the birthplace of
North Cape Light
Most northwesterly point Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the Anne books, and then at the post office in Cavendish, which is similar to the house where she grew up.
We drove through Prince Edward Island National Park, Brackley-Dalway. We stopped at the lighthouse there for some pictures. We are realizing the lighthouses on PEI all look very similar, white with red trim. Some may be round, some octagonal, etc, but mostly white with red. I did see a picture of one that had horizontal black and white stripes, but that must have been someone’s idea of a joke.
We drove all the way to East Point, the most northeasterly point of the island. Again, we saw a white with red trim lighthouse. At East Point the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and you can see some turbulence where the waters clash. We then drove back down the east coast a ways, then across the middle of the island and back to camp. Another beautiful day and another beautiful sunset.
Prince Edward Island is mostly farmland, and has beautiful, well kept farms. Mostly they grow potatoes, however you pronounce them, but we saw corn and cabbages,
Wind Turbines
part of wind farm at North Cape, PEI lots of wheat and beef and dairy cows. It is picturesque and peaceful and a lovely place to visit.
