My dad had always tried to teach us to never really be afraid of anything, and yet to know when something is dangerous and respect it. Guns Animals, Strangers these things were not always bad but not being prepared before you handle any of these things can be dangerous... i always believed that my dad was never afraid of anything...i was wrong, i found out that my dad could be afraid when my sister and i had told him we were going to hitch hike across canada. I could hear real fear in his voice when he told us not to do it...and yet i heard something else too. I could hear how proud he was of us, for doing something outside of what society thinks is normal... living the kind of life we wanted. This ... read more

After our few days in Thunder Bay we woke up to leave Happy Land. We got the trailer all ready to go, Mom made breakfast and Penny stopped over to say goodbye to us all. After a short visit we took off to Superstore for a quick reload of food and took off to the Terry Fox lookout. When we got there we were stunned by how beautiful it was. A huge 9 foot tall bronze statue of Terry Fox was mounted on a marble base with 3 paragraphs on this amazing person on every side. A map of Canada was drawn underneath and right behind the shrine was an amazing view of Lake Superior. We stayed for about half an hour then took off on the road again. Our next stop was at a small ... read more

I have always been curious about our friendly neighbor to the north, and after visiting 31 other countries, it was finally time for me to make the trip … to … CANaDA! I am educated about their ways and customs through a litany of Canadian friends accumulated over the years. My mom’s friend Jennifer is a hockey pusher, Jodie and Erin tease my stomach with tales of poutine (French fries with gravy and cheese curds on top!?!? Yeah baby, I said cheese CURDS!), and Angela from Newfoundland schooled me on the duties of a Canada National Park Warden! Plus, later this year I am to meet two Quebecans, Jeff and David, and learn that Frenchies can be Awesome! But that's in the future and for you to read about later - Oh Geez! Anytime I tell ... read more

Ride Towards Chapleau Wednesday, 15 August 2007 Today I had another fabulous ride. Finally! I took Blue & went up highway 101, heading north out of Wawa towards Chapleau, where there is a huge game reserve. There are also quite a few logging operations and gravel pits along that road, as well as lakes, hunting camps, etc. There were lots of hills again, about 50 of various sizes & slopes, and I can almost say I enjoyed them. A few times I heard sounds in the bush, like a deer getting startled, but I didn’t see any. The only indication of deer came a bit out of Wawa, where the GUTS of some poor animal (probably a deer) were along the side of the road. I imagine someone had hit a deer maybe the night before ... read more

My Laptop “Died!” Tuesday, 14 August 2007 Today was another “de facto” day off. We drove from Schreiber to Wawa, and what with all the stops to take pictures, plus the strong winds blowing at us, there was just no time for me to accomplish anything for the Tour. We did visit Schreiber Beach one last time, and Panna had fun going after a stick in the water - she’s becoming much more comfortable in the water than she was even last year. As intimated above, the scenery along this stretch of the route was really impressive, blue, blue waters of Lake Superior, the hills, rocks & greenery, and another beach which, except for the temperatures, would put some Caribbean beaches to shame. Our motel in Wawa was a bit past the main part of town, ... read more

Trying to get past the hump on Lake Superior, that was our only goal in life and darn it it is taking us FOREVER! Along the way rocky outcroppings and inukshuks wave bye as we make haste. Ontario all looks the same. We've bypassed Ottawa and Toronto and have tried to make it over the hump. We drove along the northern border of majestic Lake Superior. That led us to Wawa, Ontario, a tiny little town that closes at 10 and we are out of gas so we will sleep here. At least it was friendly. Some restaurant lady offered us a pizza for 10 Canadian bucks.... read more
