Right so I have traveled some before but it is time to venture out again. I am randomly in Toronto now at a starbucks trying to find some crazy fun hostel to stay at because yes my crazy spontaneous self booked a bus ticket to toronto with no plans at all. Just arrived with no place to stay.... but that's the adventure right??? I mean on a good note the bus from DC to Toronto was $37 dollars....now thats a deal. How could I not just buy a ticket ASAP! This is good though, a little trip just me and canada ahhhhh! I'll get to learn about myself and so many new cool things:) SO now comes the time I try to follow these directions I looked up to hopefully find some shelter and then on ... read more

Geo: 43.6485, -79.3854 Were you wondering what happened to us? We left Quebec on Tuesday morning and drove in the rain to Cornwall. We got up on Wednesday morning and drove in the rain again to downtown Toronto. We are staying in the financial district in downtown Toronto. On Wednesday morning we got up and headed out on the subway to Casa Loma. It is a restored castle on a hill overlooking Toronto. It was built in the 1920's by a banker. The first estimate to build was $250,000. At $3.5 million it was still not done. It had 98 rooms and a 5 acre garden. The owner fell on hard times and had to abandon it. We then went to see the Spadina Museum. It is a house that was lived in by the same ... read more

Its been a hectic 2 weeks! Decided 15 days ago to go to Ghana and volunteer at a school in a small village 3 hours north of Accra. I quit work on Friday at 8am (already had another job lined up), booked flights 4 hours later (Toronto>Manchester>Amsterdam>Accra), and then decided to actually look into the charity, and see if it still existed, as it had been over a year since I had contact with them. Charity still exists. First success (y) There were a few other things to sort out, like getting a few immunizations, getting a visa, pushing back the start date for my new job by 2 weeks, and one or two more things I assumed would be pretty simple. Turns out it wasn't very simple (n) 2 trips to the Ghanaian embassy, 7 ... read more

Broken bag

Arrived at the airport knowing that my bag is too heavy, but I will try and talk to the person on the check in counter and explain the situation, hopefully avoiding the excess baggage charge. Actually arrived early, check in wasn't due to start til 7.30, and it was 6.45 now. Still, I saw the line up for Air Transat, so joined it, thinking I can get ahead of the rush. After 10 minutes queuing, I thought that I might actually be lining up at the wrong check in desk. Who checks in to a flight 4.5 hours early? Why was I here so early!? There were at least 40 people ahead of me, and the same amount behind, I had gone too far to leave the line up. I didn't want to ask anyone which ... read more

Alyssa and I left for our yearly road trip on Sunday, and started a leisurely drive through the Great Lakes region. We headed north on M35 and followed along the top of Lake Michigan for a few hours - stopping at beachy rest stops to drop our toes in the frigid water! The lake beaches are extraordinary - with giant rocks, soft squishy sand, and a never ending horizon it's easy to imagine you are on an ocean beach (until you feel the freezing water temperatures!) About 4 hours into the drive, we were stoked to get to the Canada border! The immigration officer asked us the usual list of questions and let us through with a smile....but even though we asked for a stamp, we didn't get one! We hit the Canadian highway following Lake ... read more

At Last we're on our travels again. This time we're ambitious enough to take on a massive country over the next two weeks or so. Luckily, we're on a conducted tour so we don't have to struggle on our own everywhere. But we will be let loose at least once every day, so plenty of scope for disaster! Somehow flights westward are easier than eastwards. So after a fairly comfortable journey with Air Canada (eg plenty of food, drink and legroom) we arrived in Toronto to lovely sunny weather much like we had left back home. (We took the precaution of drinking plenty of water en route as well.) The city looked vast - with a forest of skyscrapers in the centre. Most of the skyscapers seemed to be owned by banks and finance companies. (Obviously, ... read more

It feels like it has been forever since we have been away and we are really looking forward to "unplugging" from the world and exploring what these beautiful countries have to offer a.k.a. wine :) A special thanks to Brian, Jen Kelly and Kyle for taking care of our furry children while we are gone! Next stop: Paris, the city of love. Our flight leaves tonight at 11pm and we are scheduled to arrive in Paris at noon hour their time. We will write again once we arrive!!! My conclusion for the day : Toronto is a very pedestrian friendly city. I basically got to all corners of central Toronto on foot today and would have racked up many kilometres. I am glad I am traveling solo as I don't think many people I know could've kept up with me today. Started off early this morning and went straight down to St Lawrence Markets which is a fresh produce market. As it was Saturday morning, they also had the farmer's market across the road. This was actually indoors and had quite a few decent stalls. However, I was mightily impressed with St Lawrence and would definitely visit here whenever I wanted to cook anything. The quality of meats, vegetables and seafood was spectacular and the prices were good too. We are so deprived in ... read more
