The Proposal
Seth is down on one knee behind the luggage cart. This picture was taken by one of the security guards.
Two international flights and 30 hours later, we landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport at about 17h00 local time on August 28th, 2011. Following disembarkation, we went through the customs formalities and passed through round one of Canadian Immigration, we then collected our bags and passed through the second immigration check where we handed in our “white slip” and had that moment of uncertainty as to whether today was going to be the day that we were pulled over to have our bags checked. Luckily today was not that day and we passed through the first set of doors, where we were to put our baggage back on the belt so it can be loaded onto our final Montreal bound flight.
As we walked through the first set of doors, we were welcomed into Canada by an announcement over the intercom stating "Would Avigyle and Seth please come to the information counter in terminal 1 for an important message."
I panicked, thinking about a million and one things that could be wrong- lets face it, no one calls the airport and leaves a message with good news. I was adamant about going straight to the counter and forgetting about
the luggage, Seth was calm and convinced me to place our bags on the belt so we would not have to deal with them in the event of an emergency.
We then headed through the second set of doors and over to the information desk. I was shaking.
Upon arriving at the desk, Seth introduced himself. Four security guards stepped forward and told him to follow them as there was a problem with his luggage. Three of the guards walked Seth about 30 meters away while one stayed with me.
The three guards started to "interrogate" Seth – or at least it looked like an interrogation to myself and the public. For Seth, it was a conversation about what was about to happen and an opportunity for him to take possession of "the ring".
In the interim, my thoughts were consumed with the idea that someone smuggled something into Seth's luggage while we were in Asia (think Brokedown Palace the movie) and was besides myself. I was watching Seth and stood at the information counter with the fourth security guard, who sensed my nerves, he then attempted to calm me.
A couple of minutes after Seth was escorted away, a random stranger approached me with a long stemmed red rose. Confused, I responded with a "thank you". The guard then asked me what that was all about... I had no idea, So I responded by saying "no clue- maybe you know...?"
Another red rose bearing stranger approached and a light-bulb flickered. All of Seth's "odd" behaviors over the past few days and hours fell into place and again I began to shake, but for better this time around, I knew what was coming... 12 red rosed bearing strangers later, Seth approached, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!!!!!!!!
I was at a loss for words and managed a quiet "yes", we hugged and kissed – both of us in tears.
Then someone from the crowd of about 100 who had gathered around had not heard my response and screamed out – So? What did you say? At which point I screamed out, “I SAID YES”! The people who had gathered in the airport terminal erupted into cheers and all clapped!
We remained in the terminal for a few minutes. Saw Nanci, Seth's aunt, who had orchestrated the red rosed strangers and brought the ring to the airport and then headed to catch our plane back home, to Montreal.
EXCITED TO SHARE THE NEWS WITH OUR FAMILIES!!!
A big thank you goes out to the Staff of Toronto Pearson Airport, the public relations department, the security guards and especially Nanci for all her help in making this proposal picture perfect. Lastly, to my amazing fiance, who conjured up the perfect proposal. Cannot wait for many more travel adventures with you xxx.
