Some say it's the coldest summer we 'ever had. But I just call it the warmest winter." - Man in front of the general store in Sioux Narrows on a chilly day at the end of June Pine needles and creosote. The smell hit me shortly after arriving to Ontario, while bicycling south on Highway 71 between Kenora and Fort Frances. A brisk morning wind rushed over the treetops and into my face, a wind carrying something familar and comforting. To call it a smell doesn't really do it justice. Almost a spirit, really. Something that rushes past the olefactories and goes right to a hidden corner of the brain where long forgotten memories are stored. Ah, Pine needles and creosote. It may only be the middle of June, but the sun is strong enough to ... read more

So, two weeks have past because we are lazy, but it coincidently means that we have more to talk about. Here goes... So, during our last two weeks in Toronto, we managed to cram in quite a few things!  One of the days we woke up early to see a live radio performance in Toronto's main square. We were having breakfast in the centre of Toronto, being serenaded three rows away from Dallas Green (of City and Colour and Alexisonfire). It couldn't have been more perfect! We carried on to get the train for a day trip to Toronto zoo. As it was a working weekday, the zoo seemed as if it was privately opened for us, and a couple of Irishmen - completely deserted. Much more interesting than the average English zoo, we finally saw ... read more

Day 20. 7117Km I knew I had a lot of ground to cover and had no idea what the road was going to be like. The map indicated it was paved but being so remote was it just a logging road that had the crap beat out of it? Once underway there is no option but to continue or turn around. This is the only road up here. I got propane in Roberval and topped up on diesel in Saint-Felicien. I had half a tank which under normal conditions, even with the trailer, would take me the 220Km to Chapais but why risk it? As it turned out the road to Chapais was'nt bad at all. It's flatter than I expected. There are farms for a while out of Saint-Felicien before it turns to bush, bush ... read more

Well, we only went to Toronto over the summer. Nothing to blog about there, besides it was summer holidays so the kids did not have to keep up with their reading and writing. We will be going to Florida in March, so we will probably start this up again at that time.... read more

Getting closer now. Got most of the stuff out that I want to pack. It is tough trying to keep all 4 of us in 2 suitcases and 1 wardrobe without going over the 50lb limit per bag. I have never travelled where I did not have access to a washing machine to do a load in the middle of the trip either. This should be interesting. Hopefully the boys don't get too dirty everyday. By the way, the Timmins Vipers, the team I play for, just won Gold at the Provincials last weekend. ... read more
