Blue Iris
.... as seen in Monet's Garden but growing behind my house. If the plants would grow as quickly as the weeds every known garden prize would be mine! The year away on the overlanding trip did not do favours for my flower and vegetable gardens.
Having the overgrown veggie plot rotar-tilled was a VERY BAD idea. Each cut piece of weed root grew and grew and grew ... am now in Mickey Mouse mode as he was when he donned the wizards hat and split the broom in an effort to stop the flood!
Not much grew last year and only a handful of beans and a few tomatoes and cukes were produced.
The plan this year has included hand spading, manure, and regular weeding. Each overturned spade of earth yeilds one fifth roots, three fifths humus and one fifth clay if I drive down the spade deeply enough. Lasagna gardening has not been a successful experiment. It sounded simple, was easy and resulted in root obsessed garden beds.
A sixth year at the Garden Centre job has once again replenished my "fly-away" account. This year an excellent team made for pleasant days and well kept healthy plants under the two tents. The days in May began
Life is a bouquet
Loblaws, the real Canadian Superstore has hired me thru the auspices of the Ontario Horticultural Association to work in the Garden Centre. cold and wet and neccessitated longjohns. Many plants became moldy because there was no opportunity for them to dry out between rain falls. One day a terrific thunder storm appeared in the west, moved overhead and a half hour later passed on. All of us, customers and crew were trapped in the only dry part of the garden centre ... we waited anxiously to see if the flagpole would be struck. It was not!
The lazy days of summer have begun. Reading books, knitting gloves for the Fall Fair in September, uncluttering and making ready for a collosal yardsale at the end of July, visiting with friends and working in the garden keep me occupied.
When all else fails to entertain, the tourist attractions of Sudbury are here to be enjoyed. Its worth a trip up North ... Dynamic Earth for a visit into a mine shaft, Science North built on a fault outcropping, an Imax Theatre, Bell Park for the Dragon Boat races, and four shopping plazas with one more on the way, can keep one occupied.
A few trips to Toronto to spend time with a friend, plans for a three month trip to Scandanavia
Iris Twoo
For me the iris is equivalent to an orchid, only much easier to grow. I have white, yellow, caramel. and brown iris in my flower beds. and St. Petersburg, talking long distance to use up the prepaid plan and general housekeeping occupy time, thoughts and dreams.
Travel blogs will be sent via a new Dell mini notebook ... do not want to get my head bashed in for what might be in a too obvious computer bag. The notebook will fit into my new backpack. The old backpack was left too long at the dry cleaners. The Dry Cleaners changed owners and someone else is now enjoying the yellow backpack that made it thru all the South American countries.
My next trip begins Oct. 6 in Norway. I am going up the coast of Norway in a freighter that delivers goods to towns not accessible by car. Seventeen days later I will be on my way to spend a week Stockholm. Hope to get an apointment to see the Karl Larson Home ... only on Tuesdays during the off season.... October is already the off season for a lot of attractions. Oh well ...hopefully not too many tourists.
How does your garden grow?
I am trying to grow giant pumpkins ... out of six seeds for $2.49CND, two germinated and are
Damn Bugs
Had it not been for the invention of the bug suit I would never have returned to the North. The mosquitoes are so fierce bites in the ass while working are not uncommon. now growing with the benefit of manure tea ...
Happy rest of the summer.
