The first 24 hours of my Canadian adventure have been up and down, but now they’re in the books. How did I get here? As most of you know, I like to travel when I get the chance, so I’m always on the lookout for cheap airfare to places I would like to go. In the summer, I like to go north to escape the hot weather in Georgia. Based on temperatures I’m seeing for this week, I’m glad I chose to go to Canada. Honestly, I wish I had gone last week, since it was even hotter in Georgia then. Nevertheless, here I am. It’s hard to predict the weather, and I normally have good luck in that area when I travel. But I’m seeing that I may have to alter some of my plans ... read more

Geo: 43.68, -79.6099A 26-hour door-to-door journey to Toronto. The Virgin 737 to LAX had a new fit-out and the business class accommodation was very comfortable. There are now several pockets and storage areas with pop-up lids and charging points. Although we were side-by-side, the enclosures do make you feel isolated from each other.Had a bit of a run-around in LAX. We arrived in Terminal 4 then had to go to Delta check-in at Terminal 2 to change our onward seating. Then on to the Delta Lounge in Terminal 5 for the four-hour layover, then back to Terminal 2 to board the plane for Toronto. Fortunately we got the hang of the regular shuttle buses, because it was quite warm (even at 7am) and walking the 15 minutes or so to each terminal would have become a ... read more

Hi there My trip is slowly coming to an end and my last stop for the moment will be Canada. I will be flying home to Switzerland on the 30th of August. Now I am in Canada in the State of Ontario close to Toronto visiting a Swiss Friend. But back to Colombia now for a moment. So I met Florian at Cartagena airport, we booked a hostel and drove there by taxi. Our Hostel was located in a part of the city called "Ciudad amurada" which (if I spelled it right.) means as much as "by walls surrounded city". It was the supertouristic part of the city and did not look at all like the Colombia we got to know afterwards. Unfortunately it is quite difficult to even find the real Colombia as a tourist. ... read more

Geo: 43.684, -79.624With the help of a lovely man over an information point, we managed to find where to drop off Bruce (hire car!) having circled the terminal 3 times!!! Unfortunately it was the wrong terminal, so we had to haul our butts through terminal 1, on a transit train to terminal 3 where we had to check in on a computer point, print out our luggage tags and boarding passes and clear security. Surprisingly this all happened pretty rapidly, with the kindle not causing too much chaos for once! We headed towards the gate as it was,not surprisingly, a million miles away. We had a scrummy lunch of wings in a honey mustard glaze and sweet potato fries which made me a happy girl!! Annoyingly we did not get a seat together. James ended up ... read more

The thing about living in a small town is you can't fly direct to anywhere but the nearest big town. Toronto in our case which requires an overnight stay to catch a morning flight so a lot of trips require a day of intermodal transport on each end. So yesterday as a longish drive and a hotel. A pet peeve is the trend of airports saying to show up earlier and earlier. YYZ wants us there three hours early :/ so I'm at the gate with 2.5 hours to look for food and write a blog I guess. We're going with backpacks and keeping it light. There are a lot of cruising sailor blogs on the area and one (www.nonconformest something.something) recommend a taxi so we skyped him and he should be waiting at the airport. ... read more

Because I was working I didn’t have much time to play around. Here it was especially true on this storm as I wanted to leave and be home for a camping trip over Labor Day. I had to really work quickly to get everything done in time. So I don’t quite remember this, but I was reminded by a Canadian friend. He had posted some photos of Adamson House in Mississauga, ON some time ago. I’d remarked that I would love to see that house and now that friend wanted to show me that house. Here is a link for info on this wonderful site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamson_Estate. We were unable to go thru the house as it is not open for tours but the grounds are so lovely with the edge ending at the shore of Lake ... read more

So one more blog on the hotel adventures. I was staying at the Hilton when the price went up to $200/night from $85, not a good option. I was leaving for home soon so I just went for price, the Super 8. Well this was not a Hilton. The room was clean so I can’t complain about that but it was at a truck stop with truckers in and out. There were lots of families there so I wasn’t too concerned about safety. The main problem was that there was no place to work except on the bed. I slept, ate and worked while sitting on my bed. But it was easy to take a nap, I’d just scoot down, nap, then scoot back up to sit and work. I was working one evening when I ... read more

In Toronto it seemed that I was a gypsy. I stayed in about 8 different hotels in 6 weeks. I never unpacked my bags, just kind of piled up my stuff in groups in the bags so that I didn’t have to dig for anything. The reason I moved so many times was quite simple, the price of hotels went up and down. Of course the Hilton and Marriott’s were quite nice but when the price would go up over $120 then it was time to move. I used Hotels.com mostly as the best deals were there but also used my free points from the Marriott. So what were some highlights? I stayed at one Sheraton that I’ll never forget. Apparently it sold the week before I arrived but I’m not sure that it made any ... read more

Nothing like lots of misadventures to help jump start a trip. On Saturday I got a call asking for me to go to Toronto to work the floods. Great! We really do need some cash; I mean who doesn’t have a ton of things needing cash? So I arranged to fly out today with a flight that would leave just later than my granddaughters as today she is flying to Belgium. Well our flights both departed late and with just over an hour to get from one flight to the next I was very concerned. I was especially concerned for my granddaughter as she has not flown overseas alone before. I waited for her flight as long as I could and we discussed how to handle various situations in the event she would miss her connection. ... read more

Travelling sure gets expensive...and I haven't even left yet! This past week definitely added up financially. I went to my local travel clinic for a consultation. The doctor was great. I would highly recommend him for anyone looking for a travel clinic in the GTA. I was originally going to go to this travel clinic, but they are next to impossible to get a hold of in person! Their website is very useful though. I was given an immunization, an oral vaccine to take at home, and a prescription for some (expensive) traveller's diarrhea and anti-malaria drugs. All that combined cost nearly $400. Yikes! I could fly from Bangkok to Mumbai for less than that! In more exciting news, my contract has changed. It was extended. I am now working a four week camp instead of ... read more
