Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Well it's 10 minutes before I leave for the airport, so I obviously left this too late. I created this travel blog to keep my friends and family updated on what I've been doing overseas. I should have access to internet fairly regularly, so I'll try to update it as much as possible. I'll also add my itinerary at some point! Looks like my battery is dying too, so I'm really gonna have to run! Goodbye and see you in August! [View Full Entry]

OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN! Hmm, that sounds like the name of some song from ‘way back - sung by some ditzy blonde babe - sorry Britney fans. But the idea is the same: For those not following hockey, our team, the Senators, did beat Buffalo to advance to the Stanley Cup Championship round - woohoo!!! They’re playing the Anaheim Ducks, a team we’ve not played since one time the previous season. Alas, we lost the first game, in Anaheim, after a long layoff, but there are seven games, so we hope to do better - maybe win the next four [View Full Entry]

THE SENS MADE A LIAR OF ME Well, the Ottawa Senators have made a liar of me. The departure date of May 15th was selected on the assumption that they would not make it out of the 2nd round of the playoffs. Now they are in the Eastern Conference Finals, against the Buffalo Sabres, so the departure date has been pushed ahead to May 29th. As I’d said earlier, we have our “priorities”. As it is, it’s probably for the better. My conditioning has not been as consistent as I’d like - hard to get out on consecutive days, or for [View Full Entry]

Planning, Planning! 7 April 2007 It is now about 1˝ months till "scheduled" departure date, May 15th. That may change, as we don't want to miss any games if the Senators go far enough in the playoffs (hey, we've got our priorities!). But, we're operating on the assumption of d-day May 15. Casper, our Ford E250 van, is currently being customized to accommodate up to 3 bikes, with a tiny kitchen area, small couch for resting, room for some clothes & Panna's crate, even a tiny porta-potty, as there may be times of "urgency"... I'm hoping he'll be ready by mid-April, [View Full Entry]
