Geo: 45.1285, -78.555Haliburton is three hours north of Toronto, in an area crammed with glacial lakes, large and small. My favourite is Lake Kashagawigamog. For decades Toronto residents have been holidaying in lakeside summer cottages.P&P built their cottage on the shores of small Lake Cranberry, 40 years ago. They have extended it and built a separate structure they call a "bunky" on their one acre lot.... read more

Biking in Haliburton County, Ontario. This is not a rails trail. Biking is on county roads. Except for summer weekends, traffic is fairly light. There are no hills, just a few short slopes. Starting Point: From the intersection of highways 118 and 35, drive north on 35 for 3.5 km. Turn right on North Shore Road. In less than a kilometre, you will come to the Township of Almaguin Highlands offices. There is lots of parking here. Two porta pottys, tennis courts, a museum and a large covered picnic area. Follow North Shore Road as it follows Beech Lake. In a few km you come to a bridge on your right. Take a 50 metre detour to observe a beautiful limestone Anglican Church on St. Peter’s Road. Back to North Shore Road and now you are ... read more

Wildcrafting is the evil twin brother of agroforestry. What that means is that while the word agroforestry communicates a sense of intelligent design in the efficient cultivation of forest products, the word wildcrafting implies trespassing and thieving away natural occurring commodities from an absentee landowner, and nature. The types of all natural material commonly sold on eBay include driftwood, flowers, feathers, mosses, mushrooms, ferns, grains, quills, clay, wicker, burls, seaweed, nuts, herbs, dried berries, seeds, cones, bark, saps, roots, rocks, fossils, shells, dye, antlers, leather, teeth, fur, bones especially skulls. Wildcrafting at its worst is definitely not cool, because if everyone was a ‘nature merchant’ we wouldn’t have much wild country to admire. But then again, if that were the case, the demand for natural products would plummet… right now our civilization ... read more

Our drive back to Canada was fairly uneventful and even the wait at the border wasn't too long - an hour and a half or so. We reached Toronto airport at 7pm. Our friend Ben came to pick us up and after a quick stop at the house to pick up some extra provisions, we were soon on the road again. We drove North of Ontario into the Haliburton Highlands to the small town of Minden. We arrived late and all the others were off to bed. The next day we were up early and so was everyone else. Jen, Ben and baby Matthew and Jen's brother Paul and his girlfriend Delaney. Jen's side of the family have recently bought the cottage and it's been a huge renovation project. They have done some amazing work and ... read more

Haliburton County The summer back home in Canada was to allow me time to do some paperwork. Last year it was mild until January so I took my time but one day I woke up to snow. This year November had weather of which any February would be proud. Winter is great in Canada except for the driving. You even have to drive if you want to see Santa Clause. Taking the dog for a walk is pleasant enough in good weather but when the walk entails drudging through snow it gets tiring. The dog doesn't seem to notice a difference. A walk is a walk! I pretend to complain about the dog wanting attention but the dog is a major source of contentment. It didn't take long to suffer repetitive stress disorder from scratching my ... read more
