Packing up...Tried to fit Schmarley in my pack but he's not down with small dark spaces next to bug spray and malaria medication...
I am traveling as part of the Global Vets 2007 program at the Ontario Veterinary College, volunteering with veterinarians in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia with two of my classmates, Michael Mossop and Jessica Wu. Our projects include working water buffalo research, feral dog/cat sterilization and vaccination programs, Asian elephant care/conservation and Avian flu awareness programs and vaccination trials. Yes, we're sure we want to go there during their hottest and most humid season, and work with chickens that may have Avian flu. What is life without a little risk?
We've been preparing and planning this adventure since last September, and it's been amazing to see the whole thing come together and know that in six days I will be on the other side of the world! The anticipation for this trip puts a smile on my face and excitement in my body equivalent to fresh strawberries with whipped cream, my family, "the boys" and pathology. It will only get better - although I won't see my family or "the boys" during my time away, there will be a LOT of fresh fruit and many pathology conversations! I'm already looking forward to having a fantastic discussion with Jess on the long flight over about the formation of venous thrombi in our legs and the various risk factors...no need for formal path rounds when we can make our own!
For more information on the Global Vets program and its sponsors check out the Global Vets 2007 Webpage or the Official GV 2007 Travel Blog where Team Southeast Asia, as well as our other 3 Global Vets Teams (Teams East Africa I and II, Team Chile), will be posting updates on our various projects.
Six more days until my flight with Jessica to Bangkok, via Alaska (fuel stop only, I wish we had more time to explore!) and Hong Kong...six more days until I start to sweat continuously for 80 days...and six more days until coconut everything.
Next post from the other side,
Laetitia
