Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

30th June 2008 After a very late night catching up on the diary while Amy and Richard tried out the first drive in movie of the season ( back at 2.00 am!) we got up quite late and then set off to see the Blue Mountain (ski resort) which is an extension of the Niagara Escarpment behind Wasaga Beach. Unfortunately it was raining so we could not even see the mountain ( I think we would call it a big hill!). So a change of plan and back to Wall-Mart for sandals and sunglasses for Bob and more clothes for Amy! [View Full Entry]

Ski Bunny!
Ski Bunny!
First time since grade 8...not bad!
What a fantastic weekend. Estelle and I got away for a girls' weekend in Collingwood (Blue Mountain). We stayed at a nice Bed & Breakfast called Pedulla's Mountainside B&B. It was literally mountainside, as the ski hills were right across the street! The woman who owns the B&B (with her husband) was SO helpful! She leant us everything from sunscreen and Tylenol to Snowboarding helmet, wrist guards, and bum pad for Estelle. We drove there Saturday morning and spent Saturday afternoon on the ski hills. I haven't skied since I was in Grade 8 and it was on my life list [View Full Entry]

A few days have now passed since departing Vancouver, and it definitely doesn't feel like my journey has begun. Currently I am in Will's hometown of Collingwood, Ontario, having just spent an amazing weekend in downtown Toronto reuniting with some of Dalhousie's finest. It is now hitting me that Nairobi is only a few days away, and all the typical emotions one feels before travel are becoming a little overwhelming. Fortunately, excitement is at the forefront of those emotions, as Will and I finish off the long process of preparing and packing. My next entry will be slightly more intere [View Full Entry]

Collingwood
We looked around but couldn't find Buckley Street or Road. Strange that!
Untitled Geoff Burt On our second day in Toronto we took the plunge and hired a car to drive north. Driving on the "wrong" side of the road took a deal of concentration, with Pat doing some exquisite white knuckle work on her seat. David would be interested to know that we had a Pontiac Impala - sorry silver Pontiac Impala. After battling the Toronto suburban traffic we headed north on National Highway 1 - called Highway 400 in this part of the world - and stopped in a town/city called Barrie for a coffee etc. We [View Full Entry]

MMMM BBEEEERRR
MMMM BBEEEERRR
Just think Beefie, what we could do with all this beer. I know drink it!
Hi Nackers, Well it has been a while since i last reported on our shenanigans but that does not mean that we have not been out and about. Canadians love their beer almost as much as Aussies so we thought we would go and see it made first hand. We took a short trip up the road to a small town called Cremore with a not so micro microbrewery. After quite as few free samples of their fine product (s it’s till no VB) we took the tour of the brewery. Beefie shed a few tears at the site of [View Full Entry]

This inukshuk is located at "Sunset Pint" in Collingwood. Its Collingwoods little joke- you don't actually get to see the sunset properly from there- very funny!
Howdy fellow Aussies! Well our working days are almost over! The ski season at Blue Mountain is coming to a rapid end, aided by increasing temperatures (today it is a balmy 14 degrees!) and a lot of rain! Next week we will head off on our cross Canada road trip for about 5 weeks before heading back to Collingwood for aunty Cathy’s wedding. Then we will only have a few weeks before hitting home soil once again. But before I get too ahead of myself, let me update you on what social occasions we have managed to fit into our [View Full Entry]

This is the view at the top of one of the runs. Spectacular!
Hi all, greetings from Collingwood. Hope you are all well and behaving yourselves. And of course staying cool- the weather has been a bit intensely hot from what I hear. Hope you have those fans out and in good use! We are glad to report that we think our bad luck is finally behind us and we had a successful trip to Mont Tremblant in Montréal, Quebec at the beginning of the month. Well that is after we had our car repaired when it didn’t start- the night before we were due to head to Toronto to meet up with Cathy [View Full Entry]

Hi again! And Happy Australia Day!!! We had a few (Canadian) beers over here to celebrate- don't you worry! We are pleased to announce that the snow has finally arrived in Eastern Canada and we have stopped being poor bums and are now are honest working people! After continuing to bide our time in Toronto and mooching off Marks relatives we decided it was too dangerous to drive over to the West to work as they were having crazy blizzard weather. So we decided enough was enough and we were going to start the next phase of our trip as planned [View Full Entry]
