Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Happy Thanksgiving! Lounging, chatting and eating! Not much to do day... Well, being miserable outside is not very welcoming, so I pretty much stayed inside most of the day other than the quick trip over to the Tim Horton's for a bite to eat and then it was pretty much back to the TV/Common room at the hostel. While watching lots of TV, I also worked on my cross stitch. Yup, I think this is the only time I've really pulled it out and worked on it. Well, I think I may have briefly pulled it out once when I was [View Full Entry]

Pissing down with rain Lazy day of sleeping in Arrival of fall. It was a pretty subdued day today. I found out that Maria's (from NYC) dad passed away yesterday. Really puts a damper on the day... I basically slept in today and had little motivation to get up this morning because I could hear the rains pelting down on the window and didn't feel much like walking about in the rain and getting all soaked. So I just spent some time in the TV room/common room doing some reading, writing, chatting and zoning out in front of the TV. The [View Full Entry]

Salty Bear cancelled What a huge disappointment Four days. Halifax! Well the remaining two day tour with Salty Bear was officially cancelled this morning. Kev, our van, was in desperate need of repairs and apparently there were no vans available for rent. So that means I'll be missing out on Peggy's Cove, Annapolis Royal and the Bay of Fundy. To make myself feel a little bit better I saw on the weather channel that there is a big meteorological warning out for the area...lots and lots of rains are on the way! So after hearing the bad weather forecast it didn’t [View Full Entry]

I think I need to pack a little lighter!

Two hours of biking Tour round the island and saw Anne of Green Gables! We started out about an hour behind schedule since there were quite a few people with hangovers. Or rather they were still feeling a bit drunk considering they had just stopped drinking about four hours earlier. lol We ended up having a sit down breakfast at a nice little place in Cavendish instead of grabbing a bit to eat at the Tim Horton's. It’s always nice to be able to have a leisurely breakfast instead of rushing around all the time. From breakfast we headed across the [View Full Entry]

Me by the Confederation Bridge.

Hike. Kayak. Whales. Busy day of doing stuff I'm cold and hungry! We started off the morning with a short hike to the rocky cliffs somewhere in Cape Breton...can't remember the name! It was only about 45 minutes for the round trip hike. More like a pleasant walk amongst the trees and then the reward was some gorgeous views. Then it was another short drive of about 20 minutes or so to the place where we could rent kayaks. Only $20 for two hours of kayaking! I love kayaking on nice and calm waters. Amazingly I didn't get too wet either. [View Full Entry]

Salty Bear begins Nova Scotia, PEI Little New Brunswick. I had an 8:30AM start this morning meeting up with the Salty Bear tour company. It took about a half hour to get everything sorted out and soon enough we were off and running. The beginning of the tour was mainly driving on the highway, so it was not all that exciting. It did give us a bit of a chance to get to know one another a little bit better and we also got a bit of a run down from Carman, our tour guide/driver. We're a small bunch. 10 people [View Full Entry]

Touristy walk 'bout town Quiet day in Halifax Train tickets in hand! I ended up staying up til about midnight last night just chatting with my English roomies...definitely not with the Chinese woman in our room! I said hello to her when she came into the room and she totally ignored me! Talk about icy! LOL I'm just about caught up on all of my missing sleep and rolled outta bed close to 10AM this morning. I saw the sun shining and felt a tad guilty for being inside so I forced myself to not be so lazy. :) Once I [View Full Entry]

Back in Canada Tim Horton's, Ice Hockey, Toques Canadiana. Since my sleep schedule has been put off the last two days in the sense that I’ve gone to bed after 3AM, I thought I might as well stay up instead of going to sleep before my flight to Halifax. Departure time for Toronto is at 6:20, so that meant having to leave for the airport just before 4AM. Yowzers! Thank goodness I was chatting with Lainie til about 3AM...that really helped me to stay awake. It's a great thing that Anita will be able to bring some of my stuff back [View Full Entry]

And the Harbor Master Too!
And the Harbor Master Too!
Darcy was finally able to meet his life long hero Theodore. Unfortunately, Emily (the female tugboat who darcy has been sexually attracted to since a young age) was no where to be seen.
Sometimes the emotional roller coaster of life decides to give you a hell of a ride. This is the description of the ride that took place on the day of September 5, 2005. Low- After a night of drunken debauchery in which Darcy and I drank heavily at PEI National Park with some new friends from Hamilton, the next morning began shockingly early, with our tent shaking violently. Apparently one of our less roudy neighbors thought that our guitar playing from the night before was not to her liking and that it was her duty to make sure our day got [View Full Entry]

While killing a little bit of time waiting for our gracious hosts, Trevor and Nancy, to collect us from the bus station, we ventured into the Halifax Maritime Museum on the harbour front. Ordinarily this kind of thing doesn't really float our boats (ah ha ha) but it was actually a very interesting museum. There were a number of interesting exhibits on things such as the Titanic, the Halifax Explosion, and solo sailing around the globe. That first night Trev and Nancy's dog, Bow, decided that Nic's smelly thongs (and that's the Australian version of thongs) would make a tasty treat [View Full Entry]
