Nova Scotia Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Motorhome News from North America 21. 20th - 31st August 2006 Back to the mainland ‘The past lies as much in realm of the imagination as does the future.’ Paul Zuker Another day, another week, another message bringing news of travellers in a far-off land. Ours is not intended to be so much a diary of events, but more an endeavour to capture our observations, our memories and our experiences of the past within the imagination, much as one would in a photograph. The future is the challenge in the hands of the planner, the dreamer - whichever way the stick [View Full Entry]

This is my first entry folks, so bear with me. It's Sunday morning, and I'm at my laptop setting to words one hell of an experience in North Preston, Nova Scotia. North Preston is an "all Black" community in Nova Scotia; an old friend from Brooklyn got married to a born-and-bred Nova Scotian yesterday. And what a wedding it was! Gerald told me his wedding was in Nova Scotia, and that he was marrying a native - and I asked him, "There are Black people in Nova Scotia?" And congratulated him on the nuptials too. Turns out there are, and they [View Full Entry]

Us a-grinnin' at Cape North, Cape Breton island, Nova Scotia. What a scenic place!
July 26 - August 20, 2006 Saranac Lake, N.Y. - Louisbourg, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia 16,409 miles to date 2,853 miles this leg Today, August 20, we crested the eastern-most point of our round-the-continent road trip: Louisbourg on the magical tip of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia—what we consider a little piece of Ireland that has washed up on North American shores. The official longitude: 59 degrees, 58 minutes west of Greenwich. That’s 62 degrees of longitude (or more than one-sixth the circumference of the globe at that latitude!) traveled from Port Townsend, which lie [View Full Entry]

I think I was on the trail for 8 hours, the road was in good condition. Its just awesome. I had the best seafood chowder ever at a local café, followed by a platter [View Full Entry]

A Nova Scotia Welcome
A Nova Scotia Welcome
A lone bagpiper welcomed all the visitors, she was cold but in good spirits and a good musician.
This is the 11th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 MON 14AUG06 I got up at 7AM this morning and was packing the bike by 7:30. When I went outside there was a pile of towels on my handrail at the steps. As I am packing up the maid came over to say she had left those rags there for me to use to wipe off the bike if I wanted to. [View Full Entry]

From the Boardwalk
Day 93: Monday 7th. August 2006: Up early for the early flight to Halifax - no brekky today - queue for the flight OK but beeped when I went through the scan, but this time both of us had to have the full body check and bag check. Before I go through a scan I remove all my jewellery, coat, shoes etc. as I always get body searched due to my knee replacement pieces setting off the alarms. Also my backpack and camera bag get scanned and wiped for explosives - fun isn’t it!!! Vera not used to this invasion. Never [View Full Entry]

Kejimkujik to Annapolis Royal to Port Royal to Digby Neck We took off early morning to hike the Hemlocks and Hardwood Trail. It was a lovely trail with hemlocks at different stages of growth. It seems a fire destroyed lots of this area but they are coming back. We saw hemlocks that were 400 years old!! I couldn’t see the tops. It was a loop trail and the bugs were out and about. This time of year I guess we can expect the buggies. Bob enjoys history and geologic sites. I do too, but in moderation. I think I have [View Full Entry]

Fort Anne Heritage Tapestry
Annapolis Royal

LOCATION: Lunenburg to Kejimkujik National We stayed at Jeremy’s Bay Campground, (no services), but natural campsites with lots of trees and quiet. The Mi’maq were the original inhabitants of this area. Kejimkuji (Keji) is the first national park of Canada designated a national historic site, which is based on the Mi’maq heritage. On our first hike, the Slapstick Trail, we came across a white tailed deer just walking along, I don’t think I have ever seen a deer with a tail. We took this trail out to Jake’s Landing and rented kayaks. This area is best see [View Full Entry]
