Thursday August 6, 2011 My Longest Furthest Day I noticed that the evenings are getting cooler (as I wait for bus). The bus was actually a passenger van towing a trailer for luggage. There was maybe 8 others taking the shuttle. It was probably the most uncomfortable ride of my life. The whole way I just remember twisting and turning trying to get comfortable and feeling great discomfort because it was impossible to get comfortable. I awoke at 5:30 am as we were pulling into Ft. Providence. As we were unloading the driver offered to take me to the ferry because we would have to wait until the ferry started up at 6 am anyways. On the way to the ferry we saw 3 bison. Saturday July 30, 2011 My friend the Rain I woke up to sunny and hot. A few hours later it was pouring rain and it was a race to get my rain gear on. Luckily the rain was early afternoon giving me time to dry out. I saw 2 more bison but due to the rain I could not be bothered to stop. I see signs of bison everywhere. They may not be on the road but I can tell there is a very healthy population here. I only saw 3 cranes today; 2 adults with a young one. Wednesday July 27, 2011 Never a Day Without Rain I got an early start this morning and did a little exploring of Hay River in the area known as “Old Town”. This area is an island and is where the campgrounds, the beaches, the view of Great Slave Lake, a native settlement and the run down industrial area is found. Well the “whole” town is run down; old and new. What is considered “New Town” is part of the main land and where the city center is located along with most of the residents. I also got caught up on my blog and emails at the Information Center as it seems to be the only place I could find free WI-FI. Hello from the Great White North! We found that Churchill just wasn't north enough for us so we ventured on up to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Theresa has just completed her 3 weeks of work at the Stanton Hospital. Now holidays have officially started! We have enjoyed the nature walks around Frame Lake, especially because we didn't have to watch for bears! The crisp air and the orange skies of sunrise and sunset in the short daylight hours are magical and the people are really hospitable and friendly. We had a great Christmas with Theresa's cousin, T-BO, the well-renowned artist of Yellowknife and his lovely Jacklyn. We both really enjoyed the North and its quirky atmosphere, however we have decided to migrate south for a wee while to get a bit more sunshine and warmth...? ... read more

When: 24th -27th September Where: from Calgary, AB to Yellowknife, NWT Highlight: A roadtrip, the longest so far with the little one. Total Mileage: 1700 km one way Yellowknife is the capital of NorthWest Territories. It is the farthest North one can drive in North West Territories on paved road. I am splitting the entire trip to 2 blogs so I can blog in detail to help someone else make a similar trip.
