Newfoundland & Labrador Travel Blogs

Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Swans on the water beside the walking path
A few days of Toronto air was enough for me, so it was time for some fresh air in the most easterly part of Canada, Newfoundland which is located off the mainland on it's own little island. Newfoundland is gorgeous in the fall, better than anywhere else I've been like say the lame Alberta fall which is basically pine and stick trees! So my first stop was St. John's which is pretty much the most easterly part of Canada you can go. Caught up with an old friend from Jasper, went to the famous George Street which has the most [View Full Entry]

Pitcher Plant - found all over Nfld
Pitcher Plant - found all over Nfld
This carnivorous plant attracts and captures insects in its personal watery swamp (in the pitcher shaped leaves) then leaches the nutrients out of this juicy dead insect shake...
Hurricane Chantal blustered through as we started our 11th day of cycling...needless to say "some" of us enjoyed the excuse of a major storm, flooding, and state of emergency in many towns in order to take a taxi for our very last 50km ride into St John's. I was looking forwards to those 7501100km tail winds...but apparently they can be unsafe. I said goodbye to this fascinating land that has a carnivorous plant for its provincial "flower" (flower ?) and headed back to Victoria. [View Full Entry]

Our B&B - Ferryland Nfld
Our B&B - Ferryland Nfld
Our B&B was the green nunnery (left background).
Ferryland lighthouse is located on a beautiful point with whales swimming along the shore, gulls squacking and terns cavorting. You can order tea, treats, lunch etc in this old renovated lighthouse then head down to find your perfect picnic spot. The lighthouse gives you a blanket to sit on and a flag so they can find you. A healthy youth scours the land to find your flag and delivers the food to you wherever you may be. The tasty food is served in a wicker picnic basket and everything is homemade and organic. To Stephenville Brad and Treena The amazing day of May 10 (my birthday) began with a ferry ride from Rencontre to Pool’s Cove. It was a much earlier start to a birthday than I would have wished for, but we had a big day ahead. From Pool’s Cove we had to bike 50 short kms to Hermitage where we were to catch another ferry in the afternoon. The biking was fantastic, for the first time on the trip the down-hills outweighed the up-hills and we flew down the road in brilliant sunlight and made it to Hermitage in [View Full Entry]

Day 1-4 Brad and Treena The trip started almost as planned. We hadnt quite worked out all the kinks, and had a late start to day 1, after we hacksawed some pieces of Treenas front rack on her bike. She was also battling a bit of a sore foot, from a tumble on the hike. It tuned out to be no big deal though. We dipped our wheels in the water and rode about 70km, and found a nice spot, just off the highway, near a lake to camp. We had all our pegs, and sleeping bags, therefore camping on [View Full Entry]
