cod stageRandom Passage - as it was 200 years ago - cod were split, salted and dried here - $1 for 110lb!
Bonavista: we saw our first puffins at Elliston, near Bonavista. They get our vote for the cutest birds going.
- also really enjoyed the Trinity pageant - we followed a group of actors through the town as they played out the history of Trinity.
- another highlight was a tour of a recreated outport - featured in the mini series Random Passage.
Placentia: settled by the French in the 1600s it was a stop on our way to Cape St. Mary's and Cape Race.
Witless Bay: another great Newfoundland placename! Our favourite of 11 B&Bs; Elaine's - where we took the zodiac whale finding adventure and passed by the largest puffin colony on the island.
St. John's: claims to be the oldest city in North America, settled around 1500 - we have 3 full days here before heading home.

puffin & gullthis gives a better idea of the size of the puffin - the predator gull is looking for unprotected chicks
Cape St. Marythis is in the very isolated south of Newfoundland - the white on the cliffs are thousands of nesting seabirds - gannets, murres and kittiwakes

Elaine's B&Bthe favourite of all the excellent B&Bs we stayed in - great location, very friendly owners and 1st class breakfast to top it off!

Another great coverage of your trip - some very professional shots eg Marlie & the Cape Race Light. Looks pretty cool, despite the 'summer' season.
Hi Marlene and Ian,
I have never seen a live puffin on any of my trips to Newfoundland, so I am envious of your experience and appreciative of your photos. Super photos of the whales too. Love the personalized trip map. I must talk to you about how to do a blog like yours. Great idea! I will also have to get the name and contact info from your for Elaine's B&B!
Very pleased you are enjoying so many of my favourite places in Nfld. Gail Aziz (to whom I had given an itinerary) called to further discuss her trip to Nfld in August. She managed to book the last room at Onion Cove for her stay.
You must be heading home soon. Enjoy your last days on The Rock!
Best,
Judy
