berg in Griqueton the way north we saw 2 bergs well offshore near Port au Choix - this was the first we saw up close. It rolled overnight for an entirely different look the next day
From Gros Morne we drove to the northern tip of Newfoundland and L'Anse aux Meadows - the site of the first European settlement (Norse) in North America over 1000 years ago. The UNESCO site recaptures the struggle to survive in this harsh climate with actors in role (with local accents) in sod huts going about their daily tasks.
On to Twillingate. As there is only one road to the north we had to retrace our route - but we have found that the views are still fresh from the other direction.
We are really enjoying B&Bs - meeting the locals and interesting fellow travellers and getting good advice.
Fogo is a little island off the east coast and probably as close as we'll find to the traditional old days of subsistence living in fishing outports - wonderful people!
Firsts: icebergs, moose burger, caribou burger, cod tongues (look deceptively like scallops!), squashberry and bakeapple jams....still to come - a Newfie dog and puffins.
Later today we move on to Bonavista.

vikingthis viking wasn't so fierce - he had a strong Newfie accent!
bergs in Durrella local told us this was one massive berg, almost a mile long, when it first grounded in this harbour near Twillingate a week ago
Prime BerthThis fisherman has set up a great display of historic fishing artifacts and demonstrates cod splitting and salting - near Twillingate
Twillingateour B&B is the house with the ladder on the roof, directly below
TiltingTilting - on Fogo Island. Many of the homes were relocated here (when the outports were closed down) by floating them on barges
good walkparts of Fogo remind us of Tasmania - wild and rugged - this walk was an easier version of our memorable hike around Cradle Mountain
Fogothis is the view from Peg's B&B in Fogo - not bad!

Hi Marlene and Ian,
I think that Newfoundland rolled out the icebergs for you! I wouldn't have thought you would see so many this late in the season. What does this say about what's happening to the Arctic?
Glad you are enjoying yourselves. Thought you would like Fogo. I hope you get over to Change Islands too.
Enjoy!
Judy
What an inspiration you two are!!!
Beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the info about this area that I know little about, but want to visit some day. Wonder if we'll go by boat or by car???
Don't recommend you come by boat...remember the Titanic!
