Blogs from St John, New Brunswick, Canada, North America
Continuing on the checklist of people to see and things I wanted to do while I was home. This time the Volkswagen and I were on our way to southern New Brunswick to a place just outside of Saint John called Grand Bay to visit my great friend since childhood, Eric. Eric's birthday was in the near future so we had at least one excuse to do some celebrating. Now Eric is one of my best childhood friends, as we grow up together, played sports together, got in trouble together and all the other things that occur on the road from boyhood to manhood. So when we get together we laugh, joke, wrestle and usually get rowdy and cause scenes. Now, Miranda (Eric's girlfriend) had made some reservations at a nice restaurant in the city. So ... read more
Travels in Canada (St John, New Brunswick)
Published: July 25th 2010North America » Canada » New Brunswick » St JohnAfter picking up our rental car in Maine, we headed for St John, New Brunswick. We took the scenic route on Highway 1 and crossed over into Canada at St. Stephen. Then it was only about 100 kilometers to St John. It is the oldest incorporated city in Canada and contains a population of about 70,000 people. The city sits at the mouth of the St John River on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy which is known for having the highest tides in the world. We stayed in the downtown area of the city and all of the attractions that we wanted to see were within walking distance. The fist place we visited was the Loyalist House. The young woman who showed us around was dressed up in the clothing worn during that ... read more
Carnival Cruise: An historic city with industrial charm
Published: August 27th 2009North America » Canada » New Brunswick » St JohnUnfortunately, our movie experience was a bust. At 9:30 Kristen and I were the only two on deck, lying beneath large towels on lawn chairs as a fog swirled along the deck. We began watching Eagle Eye on the jumbo screen. Slowly, more people began to join us. The fog horn, which had been blowing all day, was only a minor nuisance through the first half of the movie. However, at around 10:30 the volume suddenly increased dramatically, shaking people with heart-racing fear and stinging the eardrums. By 10:45 we had had enough and retreated to the club areas of the ship to watch an “R-Rated Adult Humor” show (Marvin Bell). It was entertaining, but for someone who watches a lot of stand-up comedy, few jokes trekked into unfamiliar territory. The next morning we crawled out ... read more
Crossing the border - again
Published: August 12th 2009North America » Canada » New Brunswick » St JohnAugust 1, Saturday On to Maine, and hurrah, I've ridden on two wheels in 48 states. When we pulled into the visitor center to get maps and another hotel discount book, we found that the "Cat", the ferry from Portland to Halifax Nova Scotia, cost about $330 for the two of us and Bear. From Bar Harbor it would still cost over $237. Ouch. We decided to make a run from St. Johns New Brunswick to Digby NS instead, which only cost a little over $150. This was another rainy off and on day, so we stopped for the night in Belfast ME at another hotel. Boo. August 2, Sunday From Belfast, we explored Bar Harbor, which was okay, but not as good as the hype I've been given, then we continued on the border at ... read more
One More Night in the Hampton Inn
Published: April 13th 2009North America » Canada » New Brunswick » St JohnOn Friday, we drove the few hours from Fredericton to St. John, New Brunswick. Sarah told us she wanted to see the reverse falls, which has something to do with the Bay of Funde meeting the St. John River and exploding or something. She wanted to be there at noon because of something with the tides. I slept most of the drive, after reading a bit, and woke up when we stopped at what I thought were the falls. I was blurry, but saw cars and a fence and a plain-looking building that said St. John Airport. Still fuzzy. Sarah jumps out and says, “Happy Easter!” and runs inside. Honestly, I thought she had figured out a way to get my package up here from the house or something. Then I saw her walking towards us ... read more
I haven't been writing because I've been a bit distracted. Yesterday, we stopped to pick up an Easter surprise. A surprise in the form of Jenanana! Our last show was today...... read more
After spending a night in Moncton, we headed off towards St John. Along the way, we returned to the Bay of Fundy and Hopewell Rocks to check out the height of the water on the rising tide. After hanging around for a couple of hours, we thought that looking a dirty water was not as spectacular as we would have hoped. Upon arrival to St John we were met by our host, Debbie who informed us of a monthly art gallery tour, that was being held that night. We went along and enjoyed complimentary beer and wine while we appreciating some of the art. We just hung out with Debbie for the rest of the night which was fantastic. In the morning Debbie took us for a quick tour around town. St John has a fantastic ... read more

Words are not as satisfactory as we should like them to be, but, like our neighbours, we have got to live with them and must make the best and not the worst of them. --Samuel Butler Since I last wrote, I’ve been to Charleston and Norfolk, Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas and traveled up to my new home port in New York City (we’re docked about five streets up from Times Square and Central Park) to start my adventures in New Brunswick and Novia Scotia, Canada. My parents have to come cruise with me, I was almost transferred to another ship back in the Caribbean, we added a Mexicano to our work team, my closest friends have left and I’ve almost quite my job about ten times. Four months is far too long to ... read more
Atlantic Canada / Acadian Driftwood
Published: October 13th 2006North America » Canada » New Brunswick » St JohnNova Scotia …… I have to say in all my travel planning and dreaming, Nova Scotia had never really entered my consciousness. As we were now poised to travel around the area, I began to give it some thought. The name Nova Scotia…..New Scotland, may give a clue, but it remains to be seen how accurate this analogy is. Nova Scotia is Canada’s 2nd smallest province. It is almost an island, surrounded completely by water, but for the slender 9.73 mile border it shares with New Brunswick .The coastline is varied and beautiful & where the Atlantic meets the East coast, there are hundreds of beaches, rugged coves and headlands. On the interior shores the world’s highest tides ebb and flow along the Bay of Fundy, creating long stretches of deserted red sanded and pebbled beaches. ... read more
