Lotsa Lobster Traps
Sure we'll see plenty of these before the trip is over. September 7, 2013
We had one last good day on the Gaspesie Peninsula. In 1999, the National Geographic Society listed 50 "Places of a Lifetime" and on this list were the usual icons such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Pyramids. Then in 2009, they created another 50 places this time with an emphasis on authenticity, uniqueness and sustainability. The Gaspesie Peninsula was on that list. We had no idea what to expect when we began the drive but we are certainly glad we did it and would do it again if we didn't have 81 more places on those lists to see!
Once again, we had breakfast in our motel owner's home then we were on the road again. Our highlight today was a long visit to the Site Historique du Banc-de-Peche-de-Paspebiac in the town of Paspebiac. It's one of those living history places and it interprets the cod fishing industry in this area in the 18th and 19th centuries. Sounds a little strange, I know, but we (especially Joe) found this place fascinating. We were the only visitors in the entire place so got very personalized information from each of the costumed staff. We convinced the
cute girl in the reception area to accompany us on the first part of the tour. We loved her personality and her English and we were grateful she came out from behind her desk to join us. The site will be closed next week, lots of touristy places close down after school starts and the weather starts changing. Next to the site is a working lobster, crab, and other fish processing plant and we were able to buy some cooked lobster at a reasonable price. Lobster for lunch is nice!
Today we entered the part of the peninsula that is on the Chaleur Bay. Chaleur means "heat" and the water is considerably warmer here as are the air temps. We rounded the end of the bay and discovered that we could have crossed a bridge and saved about 20 miles. The bridge is huge and can't figure out how we could have missed it. The GPS and our map didn't show it.
We have crossed into New Brunswick and it's nice that there is English on the signs now and good to have a long conversation in English with our motel owner in the town of Bathurst. He

We learned everything about the cod industry we'll ever want to know. gave us some good ideas, gave me paper clips to keep my maps folded in the right places, and brought ice to our room for my cosmo that Joe sweetly made for me. Gas is considerably cheaper now. We're looking forward to learning about New Brunswick.
