So I have decided to copy Lyndal and go by days so as to not confuse myself. Day 6 saw us on the way in our luxury dodge red and white cars to the Athabasca glacier. Bear spotting was the order of the day and yes we did see one. We also had a deer run out in front of us. Lucy was fake sleeping in our car or hiccuping. We think she is either allergic to Canada or drinking on the side. Lacey had the count at 5 hiccups. Speaking of Lacey she too like the fancy cars and decided to put my seat warmer on whilst I was asleep I woke up thinking I was having a hot flush. We arrived at the ice fields and were transported by bus to the bottom of ... read more

So because I have no real notes, Ill write from more recent stuff I can remember. Basically we have hit our highlights- we spent the first night with our lovely but ill friends in Olympia- oh my gosh they were so sick, just got married a few days before- and still they had a beautiful spaghetti dinner and told us their wedding story and pictures and basically a one year recap since we last saw them! Very gracious. Long day of driving from the mossy wet forrests near Portland, along the colombia river gorge, to dry dry desert stuff in Iowa. Alex had a bonanza at this Cabelas store in Twin Falls. It was like a destination store- a taxidermy destination of camping and hunting everything. I got some boots, Alex got a thousand yard stare. ... read more

Well, I wanted to see the mountains again. I was able to combine labor day with a week off work to take a road trip up to Banff national park with my girlfriend, Elise. We primarily would do simple day trips to hike and see glaciers, lakes and mountains, and the scenery was phenomenal. This posting is a bit late, so it may take some time for me to remember some more of the details. Overall, it was a great trip, and the 27 hour drive (one way) is not for the faint of heart. ... read more

Nova Scotia & the Cabot Trail Hello all! - Aled here. Apologies for my laziness thus far, as this is my first blog entry. Anyway, i'm sure you'll forgive me. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that.... As last Beth left you, we had arrived at Quebec train station. After a little wait our "shuttle" arrived to take us to Charny station. This "shuttle" consisted of 4 or 5 taxis which we were assured were all going to where we wanted to - we really hoped so as, due to insufficient room, we were put into a seperate taxi to all our baggage. We arrived to find some good news and some bad news; our luggage was all safe and sound, but unfortunately the train was not only delayed, but also the station appeared ... read more

Hello Folks. Wapusk National Park never ceases to amaze us! The amazing emptiness and vast waterlogged areas of lakes and tundra pools are amazing to see from the air! We have been lucky enough to have had the opportunities to fly over the park several times this summer and being able to see bears, belugas and caribou from the comfort of a Turbo Beaver. The landscapes are breathtaking! Wapusk means "White Bear" in the Cree language. The park is so named because it protects one of the world's largest known polar bear denning areas. There were a lot of bears in the park, especially at the Cape Churchill Area. The Cape is a haven for bears, most of them being large males! Here is a wee snippet of the park from the air. There aren't many places in the world where you can see so much natural grander than the drive from Anchorage through the Yukon, British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies. It took us 10 days to drive from Anchorage to our home in Minnesota. We drove from about 6 am until 2pm everyday. This part of the blog shows a selection of photos from that journey. Driving through the Yukon is quite the journey. The three territories contain one-third the area of Canada, yet the Yukon only has 0.1% of the total population. It was common for us to see grizzlies and moose along the road. The Yukon government has great small campgrounds along the road, so stopping for the night is convenient and comfortable (if you enjoy a campfire by a nice lake with very few ... read more

Ok this is really late for anyone who expected a regular blog schedule, for those who didn't (people who have spent longer than 30 minutes in my company) this really hasn't come as much of a shock to anyone. I was repeating my previous blog types to get these up to date but instead as I'm running low on time and Internet activity this shall just become such a mash up of items and ideas from the past week. First I would like to thank Banff as I am leaving it tomorrow, all the people at the Juniper and anyone who worked for parks Canada who I shall be seeing again in the future. So where to start. The last week has included some very memorable moments, from black bears with young cubs to ice fields ... read more

OK I have to admit from the off that I'm personally sick of the Canada blog titles. They seemed like a good idea to start off with and now they just seem drab and boring. But enough of getting side tracked. This week we have had a lot of free reign to do what we want to do. For me this has meant hikes. Monday morning I planned to get under way early (before 9). There are several reasons to doing an early morning trek. Trekking early in the day you get: Less people (not crowded) Fewer bugs (mosquitoes in particular) Cooler temperatures More likely to see wildlife (although that does mean the chances of spotting something you don't wish to bump into also increases.) Additionally a number of the longer trails can take 8 hours ... read more

We spent a week in the Rocky Mountains after the Calgary Stampede, sometime from about the 18th (?) July – Banff, Yoho and Jasper sections. After exploring the townsite of Banff (including all 4 or 5 fudge/candy stores!), skulking around the Banff Springs Hotel, checking out the Bow River Falls and the Hoodoos, we headed for the Bow Valley Parkway. Here we spotted our first elk of the journey.... as the heavens opened up and thoroughly started soaking us! The rain was relentless for the next day or so. We checked out Johnson Canyon and all the interpretive signs along the parkway (surely taking photos of these counts as business research so I can claim parks entry fees on tax right?). We fought RV’s galore for a site at the Lake Louise campground, then headed up ... read more

So it's time again for my Sunday morning ritual. I've got coffee on the go, John butler Trio play list going and I'm ready to get this blog up to date. Even if it takes another 3 hours like last week as the computer can't keep up with my typing! So one thing I missed out on from the last blog was that Martina, another volunteer, helped us out on Wednesday during the weeding. This is the same Martina that I went on trail reports with last week. On Wednesday we agreed that myself and Martina would go on another trail report this Thursday, as long as we could be in half a day. So on Thursday I turned up to the info center at half (past) 8 to meet Martina. The first trek we did ... read more
