Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

A Pleasant Ride, at Last! Sunday, 29 July 2007 Today was another moving day. As it was way too far to cycle from Winnipeg to our next destination, in Whiteshell Provincial Park, we all started out together in Casper, and Bob was to drop me off near a small (should I say “tiny”??) town called Anola. I’ve pretty much decided that there’s no way I can fit in all the possible stops in Manitoba, let alone Ontario, so we were now heading to the eastern end of the province, to a lakeside cabin resort in the park. We’re just hoping it [View Full Entry]

Walkabout in Winnipeg Saturday, 28 July 2007 By today I’d pretty much run out of bicycle trips I wanted to do around Winnipeg, but the downtown area beckoned for a walking “tour”, so Bob dropped me off downtown near the area simply referred to as “The Forks”. That name refers to the junction of two rivers, the Red (the one behind our hotel, so-named because of its near-constant reddish-brown colour, due to the clay or something), and the Assiniboine, much smaller at this juncture. Without going into much detail I will simply say that there is a lot of sign [View Full Entry]

Lost near Winnipeg Friday, 27 July 2007 This morning we took Silver to a nearby bicycle shop to have that front wheel examined. The fellow was of the opinion that, based on what has been done & our descriptions of what has occured when I’m riding plus his own perception of how it rotates the wheel is “finished”. The cost to repair it would probably be more than the purchase of a new wheel, and he felt that my spare wheel, which came off an older bike, would do for now. Then we went back to the place from where I [View Full Entry]

To Selkirk, round trip Thursday, 26 July 2007 Today my planned route was essentially to Selkirk & back. The route to Selkirk is north across Winnipeg & a bit to the east from the hotel. And since I had NO intentions of trying to bicycle across town, it meant that Bob had to drive me to my point of embarkation (starting point) just past the outer limits of the city. Again I took Silver; we went up highway 57 to Lockport, where I headed west again, over a relatively narrow, longish bridge (which had a nice “arch”) over the Red River, [View Full Entry]

Assiniboine Forest Wednesday, 25 July 2007 Today was expected to be even hotter than yesterday, so I thought it might be a good day for a walk, preferably somewhere shady. Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg is fairly well known. It’s the home of the Winnipeg Zoo, where the real Winnie the Pooh spent most of his life. South of the Park is the Assiniboine Forest, which is not nearly as well known but is quite a bit larger. I was concerned that there would be too much sun shining down on the Park, so I chose to walk in the Forest. It [View Full Entry]

And on to the ‘Peg Tuesday, 24 July 2007 Today we were off to the home of Winnie the Pooh. But as it is about 100 kilometres from Morden, I was going to ride up to 60 km from the Tim Horton’s in Morden, and Bob was going to go to the hotel, check in, unload, walk Panna & then come pick me up. Just to vary the “pace” I used Silver today. It was another scorcher (turns out the high was 35° C, close to 100° F, and with the humidity it felt like 43° C) and I even took [View Full Entry]

Another Run to Morden Monday, 23 July 2007 Today Bob planned to drive back to Brandon yet again, to see what happened to the parcel which had been sent to him from Ottawa. The tracking number which was provided to him indicated that it had been delivered on Thursday, yet the fellow at the motel to whom he spoke on Saturday had INSISTED that there was nothing there for him. So he planned to go back today, with the tracking number, to argue, if necessary, that there HAD been a delivery to them on our behalf. To make it a more [View Full Entry]

To Morden & DQ via Highway 3 Sunday, 22 July 2007 There was apparently a heavy rainstorm last night, but I certainly didn’t hear it. The only indication by the time Panna & I went outside this morning was a huge puddle at one end of the parking lot which had not been there yesterday. It was so big that there was a solitary duck swimming & splashing in it. (But do you think Miss Panna was interested in it - no, she was looking for prairie dogs!) But even with the rain, it was already getting really warm & humid [View Full Entry]

A LATE arrival in Morden Saturday, 21 July 2007 This morning we loaded our gear & ourselves into Casper & headed to Cypress River, from where I was planning to cycle maybe 20 kilometres along the Trans Canada Trail before returning to pavement & the road heading towards Altamont. We were planning to stay in Morden, but that was about as far as I thought I could go for the one day. Bob, meanwhile, realized just before he dropped me off that he’d been expecting a parcel of mail from Ottawa, which had been sent quite a bit earlier in [View Full Entry]

Briefly, a day "off" Friday, 20 July 2007 Today was another planned "day off", so we could sleep in a bit & I allowed myself a smaller breakfast than on days when I plan to cycle. We ran some errands, did some shopping, got my hair trimmed & did some laundry, things we can't do when Bob's got to be picking me up or dropping me off someplace. And I had fun taking Panna for a short walk along an urban recreational pathway which ran very close to the motel & taking some photos of things along that path. For dinner [View Full Entry]
