Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Hello everyone. Let me just say that the whether this time in Canada is much much better. As you all know I left Germany on the 19th of this month for a little solo adventure and things are going swimmingly. I spent 3 nights in Montreal, the bi-lingral French/English speaking part of Canada in the province of Quebec, and had a very different experience to that John and I had 3 months ago. Its a shame i didnt get here a week later cos they where setting up for a massive jazz festival and i think there was something to do [View Full Entry]

My journey across Canada has continued eastbound to Manitoba, first setting foot in Winnipeg. Nothing immediately grabbed me about the streets of this city, so I found a donut shop and ran my finger down my list of nearby hostels. Most hostel owners seem to find locations nearest bus stations, which I greatly appreciate considering my map reading skills. I circled the winning write up, and set off. Within a few moments I did a couple of backpacking pirouettes on the street just trying to confirm the right direction, and was quickly approached by a local laughing at my dance moves. Waiting for the train Spent lots of time at the Forks Train to Edmonton. I didn't have too much planned for today since the "main attraction" of getting on the westbound train towards Edmonton wasn’t to happen until about 5PM. So Natalie, Laura and I took our time packing up our stuff and having a leisurely breakfast before heading over to the train station to check in our bags. At breakfast we chatted up this cool retired couple from New Zealand. They've been travelling around Canada and the US for almost five months now. They bought a used camper van and [View Full Entry]

Long walk to the zoo Bears, cats, birds & kangaroos Chilly out but nice. I decided to change my plans today and go to the zoo with Laura as opposed to checking out the Manitoba Museum and the Planetarium. We left around 11:30, after a leisurely breakfast and walked for a good hour before coming up on the zoo area. It was a little chilly out but not too bad once we got walking. You should have seen how red my cheeks got...perma blush. haha. It was pretty quiet at the zoo. There were perhaps six to eight cars in the [View Full Entry]

Day two in Toba Another day in the Peg Easy Peasy day. I had a leisurely morning at the hostel since I made plans to meet up with Marnie, Brooke and Erin for lunch and they were going to be picking me up at the hostel at about 11:45. The thing is, once again I woke up super early this morning...6AM! I think with the time change on the weekend and then another one hour time change coming into Manitoba has really done something to my internal body clock. Must think it's 8AM. So I lay in bed for at least [View Full Entry]

These were on display along Broadway during the summer and are to be auctioned off to raise money. Most were removed already but the one outside the WCB building was still sitting there.
Haiku mental block Recovering from train ride I'm in Winnipeg. I thought I'd start off with sharing my horoscope as read in today's newspaper. Pisces: "Your ambitions are really growing. (You've noticed.) You've got big plans about publishing, the media, travel, education and moving on in the world. Today is a good day to talk to the head honcho. People are very impressed with you now." I always get a good laugh from reading my horoscope. So who is the head honcho? Would that be God?? Anyhoo, I made it into Winnipeg yesterday afternoon about 4PM and considering I was on [View Full Entry]

On the way to St. Boniface.

Sitting on the train Taken a vow of silence. Haha. Just kidding. 07:32/06:32 The clocks have turned back one hour sometime in the middle of the night. 07:01 I’ve just been admiring the view outside the window. Yesterday there were scores of lovely trees with lots of lovely reds, oranges and yellows. Today there are lots of coniferous trees (sorry to say that I never did pay attention on how to decipher a fir from a pine from a??) and little lakes. A lot of the lakes were really still and it looked like glass with a bit of steam hovering. [View Full Entry]

My world came shattering down as I learned the amount of fun it was possible to have. Its hard to explain why this was the best weekend of my life. Maybe it was the Amateur strip night at Club 3D, maybe it was the mind boggling array of amazing live music, maybe it was the 5AM jam sessions in a castle, or maybe it was being at one with 10,000 dirty hippies. The heavens opened up, thunder and lightning began their dance and oceans of water came barreling down from above, as the 97' beige Mazda Protege rolled on. The car [View Full Entry]

Not sure, but we don't think that hay bales are meant to float!!
Finally, changed time zones and left Ontario in the rear view mirror! A lot fewer trees where we are now in Brandon, MB. Made great time on the highways from Thunder Bay to Kenora. Then we drove through a short deluge of rain, the leftovers from what caused the flooding in Portage La Prairie (see pics) and Brandon, MB. Glad to see flat, straight highways. Quite different from what we've driven the last couple of days in Ontario. Stay Tuned..... [View Full Entry]
