June 7th was a great day.
I got to hike Mt. Guimes (most of) with 3 other staff members from the outpost. The hike was from sea level to 1100+ meters. This was a steep hike the whole way up. Very scenic views at the top and throughout the hike. It took us 6 hours to hike up, and 4 hours to get back down. On the way up we would hike for 45 minutes to an hour and then take a 10 minute breather before proceeding with the hike. Still in the forest, we encountered a section with boulders scattered throughout so we all chose different lines to hike up for added safety. We encountered snow 3/4's of the way up the hike. At this point snow pack was minimal but near the end of our climb we were looking down tree wells that looked over 10 feet and we saw a cornice that looked 20+ feet. At the top of our hike we reached a plateau, ate lunch and quickly turned around, planning to be home by 7:00. The steep scrambling we did was manageable going up, but by the end of the hike down Skippy and I were
so tired we were tripping over logs and putting our legs into soft earth, sinking a leg here and there deep into the forest. After arriving back to camp, we were all famished and filled our stomachs. I ate two massive chicken burritos and shortly after fell asleep. Here are some photos.
Typical stretch of the hikeThis was the average steepness of the hike. There were sections with steeper terrain, which involved more of a hands on approach.
Massive cedarThis was probably the biggest cedar we saw on the hike
The summitUnfortunately this would have taken us well past our 3:00 turnaround time. In order to summit we would have to wait for all the snow to melt (way to steep and dangerous) and either camp or start hikin
