Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

We arrived Monday morning to Vancouver airport, where uncle John was waiting. He greeted us in that super friendly way all canadians are trained in! We spent the day meeting the family, who made us VERY welcome, and recovering from jet lag. Monday night, Jeff, Micah's cousin took us out to see a band a bar in Vancouver, which was heaps of fun.. we met the band, played some pool etc etc. We were thrilled to wake up on Tuesday morning to SNOW! Yes it snowed overnight, pictures below. Below are photos of the week and the family, soon we'll add [View Full Entry]

Well here goes! This is my first entry. Disclaimer: some of you may receive this e-mail twice. I can't for the life of me firgure out how to manage the e-mail list and it is not for any lack of trying! Anyhow, I'm off this evening taking the train from Vancouver to Seattle. For those of you (I'm assuming most) who have never taken the train, it is only $25USD and leaves everyday from Main & Terminal at 6pm. It takes 4 hours and 5 minutes. Depending on the border and Seattle/Vancouver traffic, I would suggest this is a bargain and [View Full Entry]

Keeping statistics Is not very fun, but it keeps boredom away! On one of my train rides I started writing down "numbers" of things from my time away this past year. I thought I'd share some of them here with you. * # of notebooks used for keeping notes for this blog: 6 * # of underwear lost: 1. I wonder if it's still hanging there drying in that hostel in Scotland? * # of socks tossed because they've become too scary: 4 * # of pictures taken: over 6000 although the picture count on my camera is currently at 6990. Snow
Snow
The white spots in the photo are the snow flakes... (They reflect the light from my camera flash)
The weather is really weird in Vancouver. Two weeks ago it was raining every day. Last week it was foggy. (Refer to my previous posts.) Today, it snows!!! After my German class in Downtown, I took a bus back to UBC. When I alighted from the bus, I saw a powder-like substance falling from the sky. At first, I thought it was rain. But upon closer inspection, that stuff didn't behave like rain, because it was falling down slowly and gently, unlike raindrops, which falls quickly in straight lines... I quickly went home and surfed the website for Vancouver's weather. To [View Full Entry]

Last night, I was so excited when I see snow... (Refer to my previous post "Snow in Vancouver") Today, when I woke up in the morning and looked out of the window, I was stunned. The whole place was covered in thick white snow! The streets, the cars in the parking lots, the trees, the houses, etc were all covered in snow!!! When I walked out from my residence, the whole ground was covered with snow and people were walking carefully on the snow. The snow was wet, so when people stepped on top of the snow, the snow was compressed [View Full Entry]

This photo is taken in September, when the weather is still nice and sunny.
Last week's fog is really an eye-opener for me... I have never seen such a thick fog in my whole life. For several days, the fog lingered around and everybody was feeling moody and depressed. Then, on last thursday, the fog disappeared and finally we managed to see rays of sunlight. However, on friday, the whole place was covered by fog again. To make things worse, it was raining at the same time! (Fog + rain + cold wind was a terrible combination.) Finally, on Saturday morning, the fog and rain disappeared, leaving behind a clear blue sky. To everyone's relief, [View Full Entry]

GM Place. It reminds me (a little too much) of the Entertainment Centre in Sydney. Cavernous, accoustically retarded, expansive (and expensive) - as you can see, this kind of place doesn't really impress me as a concert venue. Of course I'm sure it is perfectly suited for hosting the home games of Ice Hockey when the Cannucks play here. I wanted to see Depeche Mode, but went for the cheapest seats available. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, the seat I landed was pretty bad. But on the bright side it wasn't the worst!! (Didn't come with complementary field glasses though...) On my [View Full Entry]
