Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Americans have their Spring break, Canadians have Reading days. This is just a week off, officially to study, but of course we internationals use that time to see a bit more of Canada.. That's why six of us (Freya, Mat, Michaela, Sabrina, Julia and moi) took the Greyhound bus for a 16-hours-long drive to Vancouver. As some of you may already know I can never sleep on the bus, even when I'm on one all night, so I was pretty exhausted when we arrived in Vancouver. We arrived in Vancouver around 1.30 pm. However, not all our luggage was on the [View Full Entry]

Hi Family and Friends, Happy Valentine's Day Before I leave on my big trip to South America, I wanted to make sure that my travelblog was working and that everyone was receiving messages. I'm new to this so hopefully it all works fine. So this is the big test. Please send me a message back, either through the blog (not sure how that works) or to my e-mail address (rjeurope@hotmail.com) to let me know that you're getting these updates. I leave for Buenos Aires, Argentina on February 23, 2006. I'll be returning from Lima, Peru on March 25, 2006. My [View Full Entry]

The Devin Townsend Band at the Red Room in Vancouver - outstanding! The openers for Devy, a band the name of which I cannot recall (apologies), were interesting in a way that the change of seasons is interesting - some people get excited, some don't. Occasionally the singer would scream reminiscent of Pantera in their Cowboys From Hell days, and the drummer would repeatedly throw one of his drum-sticks into the air, with a flourish, only to have it contact the low ceiling and wheel off into the crowd. Yes, repeatedly. [View Full Entry]

Got up early and finished last minute packing. Ryan and i went out for a really nice breakfast in a restaurant situated beside the golf course. It was really cosy sitting by the fireplace. It was hard to believe my holiday had come to an end. Ryan dropped me off to the bus station and we said our goodbyes. I was really sad to go but know its a place i will always go back to. The drive to Vancouver takes two hours and is one of the most scenic drives ive ever experienced. I was just staring out the window [View Full Entry]

An uneventful trip from Bangkok to Vancouver. It has re-enforced my my belief that it is the most beautiful city in Canada, though I have no desire to live here again. The view from the plane as we came in for landing was spectacular with the bays, farmland, mountains and the mighty Fraser River as a backdrop. We have spent 4 days here wandering the downtown. We discovered a walking/bike trail that follows the Skytrain from at least the Metrotown to Broadway Skytrain stations. A relief from walking the sidewalks along the main streets. We leave today for Halifax and then [View Full Entry]

Wer will sich da beschweren?

5/2/2006 Well a lot has happened since our last entry. We had a great day in Fiji relaxing by the pool, with both of us being sunburnt the only complication (me in particular). Sunscreen wasn't a priority when packing for the North American and European winters, but I wish it was! When we arrived at Nadi airport that night, we learnt that our flight had been delayed by 3 hours - making it two in the morning. There was also a transfer stop at Honolulu that wasn't in our itinerary. We befriended a Hawaiian chick - Bonnie, and a Canadian who [View Full Entry]

Our next thing on the list was the Harbour Centre Lookout Tower, but we called into Sears (for Beck), and a travel agent first. The travel agent was bizarre; middle aged, Indian and openly gay. He wasn't interested in what we told him we wanted to do, he kept telling us what we should be doing because it's our honeymoon. Rest assured he wont be getting any business from us. The tower was going to be tough for me being scared of heights, but I also love awesome views. We went up in a lift that was glass looking out over [View Full Entry]

I had bought new snowboarding boots and bindings from Dubai and had been desperately trying to track down the snowboard that i wanted. After having no luck looking on my recent flights to Europe i decided to get my friend Ryan (who i used to work with in Whistler) to get it for me through his work. My friend Nick went to Whistler on holiday a week ago and i was going to arrange for him to pick the board up for me to bring back to Dubai. But after talking to him on the phone and hearing how much fun [View Full Entry]

Doing his bit for the image of Australia one of my colleagues, an Australian expat named Kit, was sitting next to an American on a plane destined for Sydney, Australia. They got to talking and the American stated that he would be hiring a car at the airport. He asked if it was necessary to get a 4WD in order to get from the airport to his hotel in the city (what the..?) Frowning, Kit announced that of course it was necessary. The American accepted this as he had suspected as much. Apparently the look on the face of the American [View Full Entry]
