Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Feels like we’re time travelers. Even though we are more than 500 km north here in Vancouver than we were at home in Ontario it feels like May. Or June. The white snowdrifts up to the windowsills have been replaced by an almost-as-complete covering of yellow daffodils. This west coast climate is not hard to take. Perversely, we seemed to be magnetically drawn to the only snow in the greater Vancouver area the day before yesterday. We found ourselves on the cable car going up Grouse Mountain. Even at the top there were only patches of snow though. Great view of [View Full Entry]

I've been listening to a new song by Canadian artist Michael Buble called "Home." It is an incredible song, however a section of the lyrics go: "Another winter day has come and gone away, in Paris and Rome but I want to go home" It's a song about homesickness, right before I leave!! Oh well, I still love it. I think I've set a new record. 2 more days and still no packing has been started by moi. d.c. [View Full Entry]

Since I live near Vancouver, B.C., Canada I will be flying from YVR (Vancouver International Airport). I just went to their website to see stuff (mostly 'cause I was bored) when I stummbled upon a link to "Internet Access." It showed a picture of what is called an "Internet Payphone" Here's what the article had to say: TELUS Internet Payphones The airport has 22 "eMillennium" Internet access payphones at locations throughout the terminals, in addition to more than 400 voice payphones. The “eMillennium” offers high-speed Internet and e-mail connection, utilizing a small keyboar [View Full Entry]

Well we are leaving Vancouver today (sadly). However, we are heading to Hawaii which should be great. We did a fair bit here in Vancouver. The day of arrival saw us make our way to Stanley Park. We hired a couple of bikes and rode around this magnificent park. The following day we went up Grouse Mountain and met a woman, with an English accent, from Alice Springs called Jan. We stayed up there all day and watched the sunset. The day after, we went to Vancouver Aquarium and saw the Beluga Whales. They are a special sight to see. We [View Full Entry]

We have just arrived in beautiful Vancouver by bus from Whistler. After we left Las Vegas, we flew to Seattle via San José. Seattle was a nice town. Rohan was sick when we arrived so I headed out myself to explore. I checked out the Space Needle and a bit of Seattle Center. I was having lunch in a food court and saw a flier on a piece of the Berlin Wall that was on display and thought that might be pretty cool to see. I asked a gentlemen at an ice cream palor where the museum was because I want [View Full Entry]

I'm leaving in less then a month! My little brother started packing his suitcase...until he realized he'd need his toothbrush sometime within the next 27 days! I should probably start thinking somewhat about packing. While surfing the internet for travel tips I found a good printable packing checklist, very detailed. The link is below. There is also an activity checklist, the Frommers site is very good in general. d.c. http://www.frommers.com/tips/packing_tips/ http://www.frommers.com/ [View Full Entry]

Vancouver City is fun, Vancouver Island is beautiful, but our van sux! we bought an ugly van thing last Tuesday and it blew up on Thursday - Doh! All good though, after a couple of days waiting around for it to get fixed on Vancouver Island, she's back on the road and running like a dream! So far we've been here for just over a week and are loving Canada. We went to an Ice Hockey game the other night which was absolutely fantastic! there was heaps of good fights, real pop-corn vendors, and some heavily romantic type even proposed to [View Full Entry]
