Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

I had bewn longing to visit Canada for years, and to tell you the truth when I finally got on that plane I was full of anticipation and the worry of not actually liking what I found. Well, I ended up really liking Vancouver, what's not to like? The Canadians were all friendly, the food was good, the wildlife and environment amazing. I stayed at the Sylvia hotel which was located on English Bay, it was alright but the room was very cold. We ate at the Banana Leaf around the corner, great food and atmosphere, and v cheap. We did [View Full Entry]

I can't believe I'm actually doing this, the most irresponsible (and exciting) summer excursion of my life. The fact that I moved my departure date up and gave myself about a week to buy and pack everything probably wasn't the best idea either. In any event, I'm packed, and almost ready to go. I still have to clean up my room of course, but that doesn't technically have to be done before I take off. One consequence of my speedy departure was that school-related administrative stuff has been a royal headache. I actually still have to somehow get a hold of [View Full Entry]

We landed in Vancouver and took an other rental car for over two weeks. Instead of relaxing from the flight we drove directely to Calgery (took us 2 days to get there, driving, driving, driving...) It was raining cats and dogs, but as soon as we arrived in Calgery we had some beautiful sunshine. This little town out in the nowhere is kind of charming. We visited the Olympia Site and went to the Saddledom station and tried out the local bars of course. But honestely, after 3 days we had enough and moved on to the Nature. Like all the [View Full Entry]

Welcome to our new travel blog....we've been waiting to set this up for a few weeks and thought, hey, we're doing a little traveling BEFORE we go on our world trip, so why not share the domestic adventures first? It'll give everyone a little heads up on where we come from. We're currently living at Sarah's parents' place in Vancouver, having given up our basement suite, and packed and stored all our stuff for 15 months or so. We're hoping to sell the little Mazda in the next few days or so before we head to Windsor, but if not we [View Full Entry]

Giving the new journal its first entry is tough. I'm not travelling right now and I don't have too much to say. But everyone has to start somewhere and I'm planning to travel down to Washington next week, England and Ireland in August and maybe South America later in the year. [View Full Entry]

I hope everyone is well back in Aussie. Pity about the freezing conditions plaguing many parts of Tasmania. It's a real tragedy that Moira and I are missing all of that! We finally experienced some absolute scorchers here, mainly when we revisited Merritt in the interior. 35 degrees plus, we could do nothing but find some shade and consume some nice cold Smirnoffs by the cart. Jeez, this is a tough life we lead. Thats enough of making you all jealous. I hope you still continue to read about our adventures. It must be entertaining a few of you, particularly the [View Full Entry]

Intruder alert, intruder alert!!

HI everybody! Today is Friday, May 27 and I just thought that we'd start this thing off with a little intro before we leave tomorrow afternoon for Europe! We're going crazy here doing the many things that we have left to the last minute so this is going to be short! (On a side note, Graeme graduated today!! HOORAY!!) Here's a rough itinerary of our trip if any of you are wondering where we are at what times. We'll be emailing and blogging too as much as we can, but if we can't you can just come back to this to [View Full Entry]

Okay, so there isn't really anything more to explain as the briefing was in the previous entry! It was all taken on the trip home in the last few months. I just thought it would be a shame to miss some of the most beautiful sights of Vancouver Island and city. Enjoy!! I'm now prepping to load photos from the last few weeks in Egypt and Jordan, which have been amazing places to experience and photograph. And at least I'll be able to show off a bit of a tan!! Crash landing in Vancouver - Stepped off the bus with 1.5 pesos - (thinking that my last little budget didn't leave much to spare) - called Mike collect - "Hey, its cousin Charlie, got in a little early . . . nope, can't get on the skytrain, don't got a dime . . . alright, thanks, see ya soon" - Met my Uncle outside the bus station - First stop on the tour: Main and Hastings - a bust must have sent a couple dealers running, and tossing their rocks - fiends were tweakin' out, searching the sidewalks for a little [View Full Entry]

So here goes...having postponed putting this site together for the last 5 months, I've finally got my act together. Ironically, I am no longer in Vancouver (sitting in a Cairo internet cafe) but it's best to start this site properly, with the amazing couple of months that I spent at home. This was the first visit in 8 years to be more than 2 weeks, which meant a proper catch up with friends and family all over the place. But as I want to crack on to where I am now, I'll try my best to keep this short and sweet! [View Full Entry]
