Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

We leave in 2 days but woke up to the sobering news that London was struck by terrorist attacks this morning. What (another) horrible tragedy and one that's shaken John and I into an uncomfortable state of vulnerability. Trying to get any relevant information re London from CNN is like trying to get a dog to meow but we're wading through all the press conferences and updates to keep on top of all developments. We've already had a call from one of John's friends to see if we're ok - he thought we were already there and that drove the reality [View Full Entry]

Well, we made it! Our incredibly drawn-out and uncomfortable plane ride featured several transfers and an unpleasant ordeal in Hawaii - where U.S. Customs made us get out of the plane in the middle of the night, collect all our baggage, jump through innumerable hoops of bureaucracy, fill out reams of paperwork, have our bags searched (and swabbed for explosives!!) and wait around for several hours before we could get back on the plane again. This is despite the fact we were neither stopping over in Hawaii or going to the US! Our plane was simply refuelling on its way to [View Full Entry]

How nationalistic are we? It's Canada Day and we're running around buying luggage, power adaptors and enough cat litter for kitty to sniff, scratch and scrape for a month while we bust loose out of our country of pride for greener pastures (or at least vineyards). In eights days we will embark on what we hope to be a trip of a lifetime. A second ago it seemed like the adventure was 6 mths away yet now it's right around the corner. Guess I better book that rental car so we can enjoy memorable moments like driving through Provence. I picture [View Full Entry]

Hey Guys time for a bit of a catch up. This is what I wrote on June 14th for a journal entry. I’m writing this Blog form a lovely little flat in the middle of Vancouver. Lace and I are staying with a couple of her mates from home Tommo and Ali. Vancouver Island was great, all the people we meet where so laid back and friendly. We had a bit of a mishap on our second day in Tofino though. We had hired some bikes and successfully biked to some of the beaches further out of Tofino (it was awesome [View Full Entry]

Well this post is mainly to put up some cool forest pics. I finally got out of town after being back home for a month--Trevor's brother has been working on an eco-village near Vancouver and we went to pick him up and bring him down to California. We ended up driving about 1000 miles in four days. Anyway these pics are from the mountain next to the eco-village, the rest are from the Tall Ships festival here in Tacoma. Enjoy! [View Full Entry]

Jelly always seems to know when we are about to leave him behind, and he really hates it. But he hates camping even more.
Final preparations to the camper To our great delight, the new poptop canvas we ordered at the end of May arrived Friday, so we will have it in place for the trip. We’re having it installed tomorrow at Go West. They will also replace our incandescent light fixture with a fluorescent one - hopefully keeping the camper cooler on hot nights, and saving the battery as well. We are hoping the used Bentley manual Kath ordered last week will also arrive before we leave. This is the official Westy repair manual, which many Westy owners like to keep in the vehicle, [View Full Entry]

I wish I could say that my flight to London was uneventful, but it wasn't so, not since the very beginning. After spening the night before in LAX, or more like, after a futile attempt at a night's sleep in LAX, we dragged ourselves to Air Canada counter at 5 AM, ready for our flight at 740AM only to find out that there was a huge line already. After spending 45 mins in the line, we were told that I needed a Canadian visa. I thought they misunderstood me, I said, "I'm not going to Canada, it's just a layover." They [View Full Entry]

I had bewn longing to visit Canada for years, and to tell you the truth when I finally got on that plane I was full of anticipation and the worry of not actually liking what I found. Well, I ended up really liking Vancouver, what's not to like? The Canadians were all friendly, the food was good, the wildlife and environment amazing. I stayed at the Sylvia hotel which was located on English Bay, it was alright but the room was very cold. We ate at the Banana Leaf around the corner, great food and atmosphere, and v cheap. We did [View Full Entry]

The organizers were expensive, but probably worth it considering I'm going to be living out of a backpack for the next 2 months.
I can't believe I'm actually doing this, the most irresponsible (and exciting) summer excursion of my life. The fact that I moved my departure date up and gave myself about a week to buy and pack everything probably wasn't the best idea either. In any event, I'm packed, and almost ready to go. I still have to clean up my room of course, but that doesn't technically have to be done before I take off. One consequence of my speedy departure was that school-related administrative stuff has been a royal headache. I actually still have to somehow get a hold of [View Full Entry]
