Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Despite frantic bouts of packing in preparation for the Big Move Part 2, we have found time to squeeze in a few more forays into Vancouver's backyard, although relaxing, recreational outings these were not - feats of endurance would probably be a more fitting description. The first was a hike up Grouse Mountain (on Vancouver's North Shore), dubbed the 'Grouse Grind' by locals - the name alone should have given it away. We had actually been planning to take the cable car up to the top, to enjoy some nice views and have a leisurely mountaintop stroll as a treat after [View Full Entry]

Spent a couple of days seeing the sights of Vancouver. Yesterday we walked along the seawall in Stanley Park, had a wonderful dinner at the Fish House, followed by a drive through the rest of the park. Although dinner was good, it wasn't sitting so well with one of us overnight! Today we ventured to North Vancouver to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. No one told me we had to do it twice! I thought I could scamper across real quick and no one would realize that I am afraid of heights. I made it across and then was told that it [View Full Entry]

Reflections on an afternoon at Capilano
Bridge from the Boardwalk

We got here yesterday afternoon. Had an overcast, rainy day for our drive into Vancouver from Kamloops. Enjoyed the drive regardless of the weather. Arrived in Vancouver mid afternoon in time for the sun to come out. Went out with Chris for dinner and drinks, but pooped out early. The long days of driving are getting to us. Nice to finally be in one place for a couple of days. Today has been a fantastic, blue sky day. Chris took us sightseeing this afternoon to Gastown and Granville Island. Lots of walking, people watching and the odd bevvie. We'll try and [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Chicago without a hitch, security getting in seemed pretty easy (hmmm). Booked into our motel which which was at the top of the main street and pretty central to the cool stuff. Not much time to spend here but managed to visit the Sears Tower(103 stories), Taste of Chicago Festival and a few other things. Hired a car and drove from the centre of town down the interstate to Indianapollis. Main purpose here was the visit the "Brickyard" or the Indy Car Race track. No racing was on as it was midweek, but we did look around the Museum [View Full Entry]

Final update before going to Egypt since they tell me that the internet availability will be far and few between... Nat and I had a perfect day relaxing, everything just seemed to go right, got all the bits and pieces that we'd planned to get done, done quickly and easily and then we decided that some relaxation was in order so we got manicures and pedicures which had us feeling normal again! Went back to the hotel to get ready to go out for a final goodbye with the group. Well the quiet night didn't eventuate... Went on the river cruise [View Full Entry]

Hey All Well have made it as far as the airport! Was a dream run in the cab on the way to the airport and then both Nat and I had sailed through the checking in process even though the customer service leaves a lot to be desired and I'm sure that the odd smile probably wouldn't hurt some of these people either!! it was all just seeming too good to be true and then it was... They delayed my flight by 1hr 35 min without even telling me, Nat and I were sitting down discussing boarding times when we noticed [View Full Entry]

I wanted to share with you the Farewell Poem written by Adam Van Lohuizen from the Canada The Rockies tour.... We've managed to fit a few bits and pieces of sightseeing in amidst our preparations to move the first load of stuff over to Bamfield - a feat we shall attempt tomorrow. Hmm, so what have we been up to over the last fortnight? Highlights have included foraging in the Lonsdale Quay and Granville markets and continuing our tireless search for the best Nanaimo Bars in B.C., which basically involves sampling any and every example we come across. We have also explored Vancouver's Chinatown (which is pretty impressive given Vancouver's large Chinese population) and wandered around Stanley Park, w [View Full Entry]
