Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Today I had a look around uni but didnt do much as I had my trial at work from 2pm - 6pm. When I arrived at my trial I was given the beautiful yellow pie r squared t-shirt (promise to add a photo!!). I then started serving pizza. I thought that cutting pizza would be so easy.. oh how I was wrong!! There is a definite skill to it! Everytime I thought that I had seperated the slice from the rest I would try to take slice only to find that it was still attached.. The slices are so damn big [View Full Entry]

Today I got up super early so that I could go job hunting before attending my Commerce student information lecture. I took around some CV's and got an interview at the pizza store in the SUB (student union building). I then attended my lecture which was so so boring, a total waste of time!! But we did get a free bbq for lunch which was awesome! I then went to my interview and YAY I finally got a job, 2 shifts at the pizza bar - pie r squared. By the time I got home it was time to head off [View Full Entry]

I finally had a sleep in this morning.. As part of the international student orientation we were able to pick up a free packed lunch. So of course being a poor student this was a must. Picked up the lunch and went and sat with other international students. After lunch Azadeh, Sarah, Debbie and I went into the city for a look. I was amazed at how beautiful the city was. It is so green. There are trees, shrubs and flowers everywhere. We entered the city on Granville st over a bridge. As we came over the bridge there were glass [View Full Entry]

Today I went to International house and got my international student orientation pack. Went and got my university ID card and also a UPass which is absolutely awesome... gives you free bus trips all around the city. I also went to the 1000 shop... a form of $2 shop where I purchased a lovely set of plastic plates, bowls etc... Went to the supermarket... Safeway. I can't believe how crap the supermarkets are over here. I couldn't find muesli, frozen yoghurt, concentrate juice. I was however most impressed when I purchased 5 frozen meals for $10. That’s dinner for a whole [View Full Entry]

Flew from Auckland to Los Aneles (12 hours). Stopover was really short.. had to hurry through customs and change luggage from one conveyer belt to another. Matt was right and I had definately overpacked!! Flight from Los Angeles to Vancouver was only 3 hours. I was totally sick of flying by the end of it!! I was so paranoid about getting a blood clot!! I walked around the plane and did my exercises... what a stresser.. Caught a taxi from airport to University. The drive to the Uni was beautiful, heaps of greenery. I checked in at my hostel.. Well, I've got everything I'll need for a month, and it's all in one backpack. Considering how much of a packrat I am, I'm impressed with how little stuff I decided I needed. I've packed more for weekend field trips (although, I'm not bringing gumboots or anything bulky, so that helps). All I have left to do now is clean the apartment, have dinner, and get some sleep. The crappy part about an early morning flight is getting up 3 hours earlier! I can hardly believe I'm going for a whole month. It's not that long, really, especially looking back at [View Full Entry]

Still madly trying to finish up work for my summer contract, and taking care of a few more details before packing this weekend. If I have time, I might go to a friend's farewell BBQ this weekend (it's not for me, so I won't feel bad if I don't show). Map of my flight route Tomorrow will be my last Martial Arts practice with Academie Duello, although I have promised to continue the workout program one of the instructors has designed (I'm one of the guinea pigs). I'm currently working on re-wri [View Full Entry]
