Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

The following chronicles our Alaksa Northbound cruise on the m/s RSSC Mariner. Hence, a lot of RSSC Mariner references are made in the course of the narration. We decided to fly up one day ahead of sail away, in order to explore Vancouver, B.C. a bit. Our Air Canada flight was uneventful and we had clear weather all the way up. Upon arrival, I was duly impressed with the Vancouver International Airport facilities…our gate was at the far end of the terminal and in order to get through customs we had to walk through an exhibit that mimicked the local [View Full Entry]

Today I had the rest of my classes.. It began with Intermediate Financial Accounting 2. One word - AWFUL! We were given name cards to put in front of us. This meant that the lecturer could ask us a question at any point in the lecture. He started by telling us that the paper was probably the most difficult accounting paper at UBC. He then went on to talk about the paper prior to this one (Intermediate Financial Accounting 1). As I had no idea what was in that paper I felt like a complete idiot when he asked me questions. So cute!!!

Today was the start of uni. It was also my first rostered day at Pie R Squared. I started work at 7am. We did not open until 10am and so for the first 3 hours I had to make pizzas. Some of the pizzas are crazy. We make a pizza which has sour cream on the base, then 3 baked potatoes broken up and sprinkled (clumped) all over the base, bacon and spring onion sprinkled over the potatoe and then covered in cheddar (ie extremely orange cheese!!). It is called a bacon baked potatoe pizza... and yes it is yummy!! but [View Full Entry]

Today the weather was really crap. Laura, Debbie, Sarah and I went to Granville Island. It is really amazing. There is this piece of land which juts out from the mainland and is only accessible over this bridge. The place is called Granville Island although it is not really an island. What makes Granville even better is the fact that it is beneath one of the large bridges which leads into downtown Vancouver. Granville Island is home to many boutique shops and also to an indoor marketplace. The market is really cool as it is all indoors. It is a huge [View Full Entry]

Today I had a look around uni but didnt do much as I had my trial at work from 2pm - 6pm. When I arrived at my trial I was given the beautiful yellow pie r squared t-shirt (promise to add a photo!!). I then started serving pizza. I thought that cutting pizza would be so easy.. oh how I was wrong!! There is a definite skill to it! Everytime I thought that I had seperated the slice from the rest I would try to take slice only to find that it was still attached.. The slices are so damn big [View Full Entry]

Today I got up super early so that I could go job hunting before attending my Commerce student information lecture. I took around some CV's and got an interview at the pizza store in the SUB (student union building). I then attended my lecture which was so so boring, a total waste of time!! But we did get a free bbq for lunch which was awesome! I then went to my interview and YAY I finally got a job, 2 shifts at the pizza bar - pie r squared. By the time I got home it was time to head off [View Full Entry]

I finally had a sleep in this morning.. As part of the international student orientation we were able to pick up a free packed lunch. So of course being a poor student this was a must. Picked up the lunch and went and sat with other international students. After lunch Azadeh, Sarah, Debbie and I went into the city for a look. I was amazed at how beautiful the city was. It is so green. There are trees, shrubs and flowers everywhere. We entered the city on Granville st over a bridge. As we came over the bridge there were glass [View Full Entry]

Today I went to International house and got my international student orientation pack. Went and got my university ID card and also a UPass which is absolutely awesome... gives you free bus trips all around the city. I also went to the 1000 shop... a form of $2 shop where I purchased a lovely set of plastic plates, bowls etc... Went to the supermarket... Safeway. I can't believe how crap the supermarkets are over here. I couldn't find muesli, frozen yoghurt, concentrate juice. I was however most impressed when I purchased 5 frozen meals for $10. That’s dinner for a whole [View Full Entry]
