Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

23 hours after entering the Quito Airport, I'm finally home! There was a lot of uncertainty regarding the situation with Houston and Hurricane Rita, so I went super early (4 AM), and had to wait for the Continental counters to open so I could check in. It wasn't busy at all and getting to the gate took less than an hour. Then, I got to watch the sunrise over the tarmac. A few lucky passengers who were scheduled to fly out during the hurricane had rescheduled and ended up getting upgraded to first class. Lucky so-and-so's. The flight was full, but [View Full Entry]

Confused!!

19 September - 7 October My poor travel diary is looking a little sad. I haven't really done anything particularly exciting since Vancouver Island. Univrsity is ticking along. I played netball in the weekend. The game was an hour long (15 minute quarters) and I nearly died because I'm so unfit. That prompted me into fitness action.. I have been running every morning this week!! On the subject of fitness, Vancouver people are obsessed with fitness and health. They are all total gym bunnies. Ash asked me if the Canadian girls are hot and I can only say yes. They are [View Full Entry]

With the departure date (a very small 12 days) drawing ever so close I thought I would let you all know that I've noticed an increase in the number of zits visible on my face...what does that mean? Stressed may be a bit harsh so rather, lets say I'm getting excited albeit nervous about departing into the unknown. Thats normal right? Of course it is. Other than that, all's cool my babies. Friday - 16 September I had 2 assignments due on Monday but as I was going away to Vancouver Island for the weekend I had to get them done. So I spent all day on Friday trying to do them. Everyone else who was heading to Vancouver Island (Candace, Azadeh, Sarah, Simon, Jeff, Dan, Mick, Tony and Peter) left at 11am but Debbie didn't finish uni until 3.30pm and so Kat, Laura (a different one) and I waited for her. The trip over to Victoria (the main city on Vancouver Island and the capital of British Columbia) was really really long. [View Full Entry]

Well I haven't been doing anything very exciting for the last few days. I have all my classes and I'm working 14 hours from Monday to Wednesday. So those days are basically going to be the same old story every week... get up, go to class, go to work, go to bed... really exciting. I thought I would do a quick update on people that I have met over here and about what classes I'm taking... CLASSES Sports Law - this is a seminar paper which means that it is more like a big discussion and 40% of our marks are [View Full Entry]

Having an awesome time on my trip across America. The highlights so far have been hiking in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks and in the snow capped Rocky mountains. It has been a lot of traveling on a cramped mini bus so it was great to get outdoors and do some really good hikes. Now in Vancouver and after lots of camping I am looking forward to a night in a hotel in Seattle tomorrow! I then head down to Yosemite National Park and San Francisco before finishing the trip in LA on 23 August. [View Full Entry]
