Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

I arrived in Vancouver two hours late, so I was very glad that I arranged to spend a night there before heading out to Vancouver Island. The bus I needed to catch leaves at 9am, well after my plane arrived. I am very grateful to Luke and Abi, friends of my brother Sean, for their hospitality at such short notice. I spent the day sleeping until Abi arrived home at 4pm. I then spent the evening with Luke and Abi, which I enjoyed immensely. I felt like I already knew them, despite the fact that I had somehow never met them [View Full Entry]

It's almost surreal Surprised my whole family, with a ring on the phone. Pinch me! I can't believe that I've been home for about 24 hours now! It's been great. Yesterday, after finally pulling into Via's Vancouver Station and then having to wait for ages for my baggage to come out I headed towards Main and Terminal to catch the bus home. I tell you, that bus ride home seemed almost as long as the previous 26 hours I had just spent on the train from Edmonton. lol I got off one stop before my stop since I had two last [View Full Entry]

My they've grown!

I am homeward bound Three hundred and nineteen days To circle the Earth. Six hours of sleep, contorted on a two seater train seat. I'm surprised that I actually feel refreshed after a big stretch or two. I guess the excitement of getting closer and closer to home has helped. It is currently 06:34. No idea where we are since it's still really dark out and I can't see a thing except the outline of various trees. Hopefully we made up some time last night so that we're not too far off the time table. Oh hey, there's water and mountains [View Full Entry]

Having spent the morning doing the sea plane thing (centurylong), we found another activity to do in Vancouver that afternoon. This was Kayaking, when i first saw that we could Kayak in the Pacific ocean i figured this would be a lot of fun, after all it was new (to me anyway), it was adventurous and this trip is all about things like that. I persuaded Elaine to also do it (it wouldn't be as much fun on your own) and we paid for Kayaks for two hours. (centurylong) However when we actually went down to the jetty to get into [View Full Entry]

Sea Plane North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver
November the seventh was another nice day in Vancouver (something thats apparently quite rare at this time of the year) and we went down to some docks in order to undertake a sightseeing tour of the city on a seaplane. This was to prove to be another great experience in Vancouver. It was a small plane and when we went down to the water the pilot (jokingly) said he wanted one of the passengers to "co-pilot" the plane with him. Initially he (again jokingly, but i didn't get that it was jokingly because i never get stuff like that) said that [View Full Entry]

First up, sorry about the title of this diary entry, i really tried to think of something better. Vancouver at this time of year tends to be very rainy and its hard for any tourists at this time of year to experience the city's beauty and vibrancy because of all the rain. We were prepared for the fact that this might be the case so it came as a welcome surprise that on Sunday the 6th it was a really sunny day, a day that would give us an opportunity to see for ourselves the city's attractions. In the morning we [View Full Entry]

My second trip to a sports event in as many days saw me go to the BC stadium in Vancouver to watch a Canadian Football game, this was me going by myself as Elaine did not want to go. Canadian Football is a similar game to American Football, but there are differences in the rules that make for a more exciting game (i won't go into the rules here, because firstly anybody reading this will become more bored than they already are and secondly i don't fully get them myself to be honest). However the players tend not to be as [View Full Entry]
