After sitting at home for nearly a year, I realized I could be working from nearly anywhere, given I was close to the same time zone as home. I had also been learning about digital nomads over the past year. The more I thought about doing something in-between, the more I liked the idea. Given my job, I couldn't be a full-time digital nomad. There are things in my career that still need to be face to face, but perhaps I could pull this off for a month a quarter, with the first week being a holiday and the next three being remote work. Given the lockdowns, I knew my first location would have to be in Canada, so why not Vancouver in the spring!?! I knew Vancouver would be well ahead of Edmonton when it ... read more

The weather forecast was right unfortunately, rain in Vancouver today! Had a late start, slept in, still trying to deal with jet lag. Had a nice breakfast downstairs in the cafe, the rain wasn't too bad, so decided we would go to Granville Island, (which is a peninsula though, not an island), an area of Vancouver with a public market and lots of art and craft shops, cafes etc, and somewhat undercover. Everybody else obviously had the same idea. We checked out the public transport options, then jumped in a cab! Went first to the public market, lots of fresh produce stalls, lots of yummy looking food stalls, and also many craft stalls, and lots of people! Also looked at many art galleries, craft shops, and lots of souvenir shops that have been renamed galleries! Rain ... read more

Have you ever thought about what you'd do if given an extra two days in your favourite city? We had some half formed plans to visit the city of Victoria, British Columbia's capital, on Vancouver Island. This was another thing that I had wanted to do six years ago and had not got around to. Sadly we had not anticipated how much time and money it would cost us to get there and we ended up cancelling. The upshot of this was that it gave us two more days in Vancouver which we were great as our visit so far had felt very rushed. However we didn't really know what we wanted to do with the time. Day 4 - China Town, English Bay and Flying Over Canada Our bodies just would not adjust to the ... read more

I was a little nervous about this trip, mainly as I had not yet tested out my ESTA (my visa waiver allowing me into America) and had feared that I may miss out on seeing a place that was on my 'to do' list right from the start of my adventures. Alaska was a place that had fascinated me for a number of reasons and although I only saw a small part of it, it was definitely a place well worth seeing and lived up to expectations. However, Vancouver was first on our itinerary and it also was one of the major places in Canada I had wanted to see. It was the last few days before mum and sis would move on to a tour of Eastern Canada and America and I would not see ... read more

Well we have arrived back in Vancouver after another 2 days on the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff via Kamloops. Tomorrow we leave Canada on the Radiance of the Seas and head up through the Inside Passage, Juneau, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Skagway to Seward where we board a wildlife tour bus to take us into Anchorage for the afternoon on the 28th. As the wifi is super $$$$$ on board and we are doing activities at each port I probably won't be able to do another blog for a week and a half. I know, I know! How can you all stand to be incommunicado with me for sooooo long????? Buck up everyone. I'll send more news as soon as I can. As for the last few days, here's what's happened: We made it to ... read more

I awoke at the Zenhut three hours later feeling refreshed and slightly less grouchy. A word on the Zenhut. This place is crazy. I am attaching a photo of the room in which I napped; how can you not relax in here? Also, Fly must buy votive candles by the truck load. There are just drawers and drawers of them here. At present, I am in the garden surrounded by candles. They are relaxing but I also feel it is my duty to burn some so Fly can have some room for other household items. Anyway, when I woke up I decided I needed to check out a new neighborhood. The West End is cool, but its very bohemian. It kind of reminds me of The Haight and I only go there for Cha Cha Cha. ... read more

July 26, 2013 We arrived in Vancouver yesterday to a glorious summer evening. 25c and a perfect blue sky at 6.30 pm. It’s truly wonderful, descending into Vancouver on a beautiful evening. The mountains are quite surreal lit up by the evening sun. It’s such a beautiful and “well placed” city. And so lovely to be back. Overall the flight was good. Although it has to be said we were a little underwhelmed with Virgin Atlantic. When I think “Virgin” I imagine ‘up to the minute’ technology, top notch entertainment etc. So it was with disbelief and uncontained horror when I finally had to conclude (after much pressing of buttons) that I had no control over the film I was trying to watch. No pause function?! I didn’t realise such archaic technology still existed on a ... read more

February 20, 2013 I am aboard Amtrak headed to Vancouver, British Columbia. I am with friends Bill, Nancy and Judy taking a day trip to our sister city to the north. The train exited Seattle through the venerable 110 year old tunnel beneath the city and is now hugging the edge of Puget Sound. The Sound is calm, the surface smooth and glasslike. The temperature is around 40 F. The sky overcast. A very nice, typical day in the Northwest. Who am I trying to fool. It is dreary and rain threatens. None the less we are determined to have a good time. We arrived in Vancouver at the train station on the outskirts of the city. From there we took the Sky Train into the city and got off at Canada Place, waterfront station. The ... read more
