Tuesday 18th June2019 Dawn came early to Ucluelet harbour and by 6 a.m. the sun was casting golden shimmers in streaks over the water. Ucluelet is a unique natural harbour, reached from the ocean by a long inlet dotted with islands, from the jagged rocky end to this mountainous and deeply- forested peninsular. The Ucluelet Peninsular is surrounded by a distinct marine ecosystem full of seabirds, seals, sea lions, eagles, whales and sea otters. The forests are home to black bears, cougars, wolves, deer, moose and raccoons. Ucluelet means “People of the Safe Harbour” in the indigenous Nuu-Chah-Nulth language spoken by First Nation peoples in the area. It is one of the most beautiful harbour settings we have ever seen. The little Dixie 4, our cruiser for this morning’s marine tour, was skippered by her owner, ... read more

Monday 17th June 2019 Yesterday, we left Squamish early at 8 a.m. to drive down the “Sea to Sky Highway” to Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver. To quote my friend Barbara in her last comment on my previous blog, Canada just keeps “giving and giving”; great way to describe it! As one drives down the Pacific coast, the sea of the Howe Sound shimmers on the left and the snow-capped mountains soar to the right. It is sensational, stunning and takes away breath! We stopped just once at Porteau Cove, it was rather misty and mysterious, the mountains looking pale grey above a silvery sea. By 9 a.m. we were at the ferry terminal in Horseshoe Bay. We were delighted to be told that there was room for us on the 11 a.m. ferry. We parked up ... read more

We know it's incredibly wasteful of energy but we wanted to sleep to the sound of the ocean, so we left the porch door open with the fireplace running all night. It was amazing waking up to the morning chill next to the fire. Even more amazing was drinking my cup of coffee on said porch with my hotel binoculars, spying on sea otters eating breakfast. Our Storm Watching package came with breakfast the first two mornings (our third night wasn't part of the package but we didn't need breakfast that last morning since we were leaving so early anyway). We could either eat at the Driftwood Cafe or the Pointe Restaurant. We chose the Pointe because of the amazing views from its dining room. We found out quickly this trip that the town was practically ... read more

Diet gone to pot after world's biggest muffin served with fruit for breakfast . Jim had monster mish mash of savoury and sweet on same plate and has been regretting it ever since. Went sight seeing walk along coast with scenic views around every corner. Saw a bald eagle fishIng at sea. Took about an hour and a half including stops for Jim to get his camera setting wrong....... Again. Lunch at working harbour fishermans club overlooking wharf. Another eagle. About to go back to try to get close up photo of eagle but not holding breath. Jim likes bird photos as we all know. Written up by Jim this time as if you hadn't noticed. And here's proof we did see whales... read more

From the campground in Nanaimo, I headed out to the highway. I had had a restless night in my tent, but I wasn't overly tired, so that was nice. I decided that if I passed a Walmart I would stop and get a bit bigger tent, and one that didn't have a hole in it, should I ever encounter rain (wishful thinking, I'm sure, given my attempt to tent my way around the country in the summertime). Then I passed a Walmart. Providence? I stopped and got the new tent. Hopefully it will fit the bill in the dry department. Then I headed down the highway until I reached the turnoff for the west side of the island and Pacific Rim National Park. This is one of Canada's west-most national parks. I have always heard of ... read more

Well to start off with we forgot to mention last time our amazing experience of the final of the Canadian Football league- the Grey Cup. We went into town to see the game which was being played at the nearby Vancouver stadium and it was the Vancouver Lions vs the Winnipeg Bombers. It was a big match for Vancouver because they hadnt won the cup at their home field in 20 years! The whole city went nuts for their team after the Lions won and it was really fun to be apart of the crowd. A few days later we went on an epic walk with Derek through the mountain bike tracks on the North Shore of Vancouver - they are the pictures you see of the wooden features which are ramps & jumps and more ... read more

Wednesday September 21, 2011 Ucluelet As I packed my bike this morning it started to rain. I didn’t think much of it as I have ridden through rain all summer long. I should have given it a lot of thought and stayed put in Port Alberni. It rained the entire day, all 100 km’s to Ucluelet. I have never ridden a full day through straight rain. There were a few short moments that the rain would lighten up but it never stopped. Every time I get wet on this trip I think it is the wettest that I can get. Today I and my gear are officially wetter than they have ever been. Everything is wet. The road from Port Alberni to Ucluelet is very very hilly and winding. There are a few areas where there ... read more

Hello Everyone! Sorry that the blog has not been updated recently. It has certainly been a busy and eventful week. I finished up my French program on the 19th of June (which, I am proud to say that I have passed) and then Dad and I headed for Tofino. We started out with a quick grocery shop to pick up some things for our hostel stay in Tofino as we knew that the prices would likely be inflated given the smaller town. Then we caught the ferry and had a great hour and a half ride to Nanimo. From here we had a really exciting car ride up valleys and through mountains for about 5 hours until we reached our final destination in Tofino at a hostel. On the drive we stopped just before Port Alberni ... read more
